THE letter of Edward F. Hardman in NATURE (vol. xxix. p. 452), with reference to the suicide of black snakes, recalls an incident which I once witnessed; I was quite small, but my memory of the strange occurrence is very clear and distinct. It was in the State of Illinois, when at that early day a short, thick variety of rattlesnake was very numerous ...

Abstract Homology in vertebrate body plans is traditionally ascribed to the high‐level conservation of regulatory components within the genetic programs governing them, particularly during the “phylotypic stage.” However, advancements in embryology and molecular phylogeny have unveiled the dynamic nature of gene repertoires responsible for early ...

Spatiotemporal distribution of neural crest cells in the common wall lizard Podarcis muralis
Abstract Background Neural crest cells (NCCs) are migratory embryonic stem cells that give rise to a diverse set of cell types. Here we describe the dynamic distribution of NCCs in developing embryos of the common wall lizard Podarcis muralis inferred from 10 markers.

Assessing release strategies for reintroductions of endangered Wyoming toads
We performed reintroductions of captive‐bred Wyoming toads (Anaxyrus baxteri) (photo B.) to test the effects of soft‐ and hard‐release methods through implementation of a delayed‐release. After release, the toads were tracked using a harmonic tracking system in Wyoming, USA. The soft‐released toads were held in an outdoor enclosure for 14 days prior to

Snakes on the plains: The impacts of habitat structure on snake communities in Illinois grasslands
We employed GLMMs and a community occupancy model to investigate how habitat structure may influence the relative abundance and diversity of snakes in grasslands. We found woody cover in a grassland patch and the presence of roads around a patch perimeter to be highly associated with both snake relative abundance and diversity.

Da Vinci's yeast: Blastobotrys davincii f.a., sp. nov
Several surveys from around the world reported the same yeast species from a wide range of substrates, most notably from the iconic self‐portrait of Leonardo da Vinci. None of these studiesidentified their strains, clones, or OTUs as Blastobotrys. Here we describe this as a new species and name it Blastobotrys davincii.
