Strategies in ‘snake venomics’ aiming at an integrative view of compositional, functional, and immunological characteristics of venoms

open access: yesJournal of Venomous Animals and Toxins including Tropical Diseases, 2017
This work offers a general overview on the evolving strategies for the proteomic analysis of snake venoms, and discusses how these may be combined through diverse experimental approaches with the goal of achieving a more comprehensive knowledge on the ...

Subsurface State Bilayer in Tetragonal Ferroelectric BaTiO3

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
The subsurface Ba2+disorder, reveals the pairs of O vacancies (VO++$V_O^{ + + }$ s) and small polarons (SPe‐SPe−$SP_e^ - $ s) (Figure a–b), with the charge balance, as the following: Ti3++[VO+++SPe−]pair↔Ti4+${{T}_i}^{3 + } + {{[V_O^{ + + } + SP_e^ - ]}_{pair}} \leftrightarrow T_i^{4 + }$ which is consistent with observed low‐energy electron ...

Unique bone microanatomy reveals ancestry of subterranean specializations in mammals

open access: yesEvolution Letters, Volume 6, Issue 6, Page 552-561, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Acquiring a subterranean lifestyle entails a substantial shift for many aspects of terrestrial vertebrates’ biology. Although this lifestyle is associated with multiple instances of convergent evolution, the relative success of some subterranean lineages largely remains unexplained.

Does gestation or feeding affect the body temperature of the golden lancehead, Bothrops insularis (Squamata: Viperidae) under field conditions?

open access: yesZoologia (Curitiba), 2010
Temperature affects physiological performance in reptiles and, therefore, body temperature (Tb) control is argued to have an important adaptive value.

Partial Amniote Sex Chromosomal Linkage Homologies Shared on Snake W Sex Chromosomes Support the Ancestral Super-Sex Chromosome Evolution in Amniotes

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2020
Squamate reptile chromosome 2 (SR2) is thought to be an important remnant of an ancestral amniote super-sex chromosome, but a recent study showed that the Siamese cobra W sex chromosome is also a part of this larger ancestral chromosome.

A Convoy of Magnetic Millirobots Transports Endoscopic Instruments for Minimally‐Invasive Surgery

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The first electrocautery procedure performed by a team of millirobots (TrainBots) is presented. Enhanced with optimized feet, millirobots form a convoy to facilitate the collaborative transportation of wires and catheters through biological lumens, e.g. bile ducts. It opens up the possibility of using a team of mini‐robots in future endoscopic surgery.

Domino Snake Problems on Groups [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
In this article we study domino snake problems on finitely generated groups. We provide general properties of these problems and introduce new tools for their study. The first is the use of symbolic dynamics to understand the set of all possible snakes.

Bioinspired Mechanisms and Actuation of Soft Robotic Crawlers

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Researchers have been developing soft materials and robotic crawlers inspired by soft‐bodied animals to mimic effective crawling in complex environments. This review explores the state‐of‐the‐art in soft crawlers, highlighting the interaction between materials, crawling mechanisms, actuation, and applications. The review concludes by providing insights
