The karyotypes are gifts of Dr. D. H. Wurster-Hill, Hanover, New Hampshire, USA. The animals are kept in the National Zoological Park, Washington, D.C., USA. Skin biopsies were used for the initiation of cell cultures. A male specimen from the Buffalo Zoo was studied by M. M. Cohen and the results were the same as the ones presented here.

Ever since I first met a female snow leopard and photographed her in northern Pakistan in 1970, the frosty eyes and smoky-gray coat of the cat has shadowed my work, sometimes as an insistent presence and at others as a vague mountain spirit. I have spent years in the realm of the snow leopard yet have seldom seen it.
