Exploring the influence of snow microstructure on dual-frequency radar measurements

2017 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2017
Recent advancements to the understanding of snow-microwave interaction have helped to identify the considerable potential for radar-based retrieval of terrestrial snow mass. If applied to space-borne platforms, such retrievals could provide much needed improvements to the spatial and temporal availability of snow mass estimates.

Microstructural analytical techniques for snow compacted by an aircraft tire

Tribology International, 2007
Abstract Assessing the frictional condition of snow-contaminated runways is difficult and requires an understanding of the tribological processes during the tire–snow–pavement interaction. Hence, analytical techniques to study the snow after the interaction are desired.

Changes in Microstructural Parameters of Snow during Deformation.

1994
Abstract : This study utilized quantitative and morphology theory to describe the microstructure of cohesive granular materials and to relate microstructure to mechanical and physical properties. Snow was used as the experimental material. A unique feature of the theory developed in this grant involved the description of the necked areas which are the ...

Snow Microstructure over Antarctic Landfast Ice

Landfast ice plays a significant role in climate and ecosystems in Antarctic coastal regions. From October to December 2022, we investigated the physical properties of snow and sea ice on Antarctic landfast ice in McMurdo Sound, following the protocols from the MSOAiC expedition. Our measurements confirmed some findings from MOSAiC (e.g.

Optical Determination of Snow Microstructure Parameters with the SnowImager instrument

Extensive and reliable ground-truth measurements of snow properties play a crucial role in environmental science to validate models and remote-sensing products. Among the available methods, optics-based approaches offer a good compromise between measurement accuracy and sufficiently large coverage. We present the technical details of the SnowImager as ...
