Measurement of snow particle size and velocity in avalanche powder clouds [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2017
Particle size, particle speed and airflow speed have been measured in the powder snow clouds of avalanches to investigate the suspension and transportation processes of snow particles. The avalanches were artificially triggered at the Lautaret full-scale

The importance of particle size distribution and internal structure for triple-frequency radar retrievals of the morphology of snow [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Measurement Techniques, 2019
The accurate representation of ice particles is essential for both remotely sensed estimates of clouds and precipitation and numerical models of the atmosphere.

Influencing Factors of Artificial Snow Particle Size under Natural Environmental Conditions

open access: yesZhileng xuebao
In this study, artificial snow is produced under natural conditions using a snowmaking machine, and the microscopic morphology of the snow crystals is obtained.

Study of Overall Morphology and Particle-size Distribution of Spray Field in Gas–liquid Mixed Snow-makers

open access: yesZhileng xuebao, 2023
Since the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, the domestic ice and snow industry has grown rapidly, driven particularly by artificial snow parks with higher requirements in terms of both the quantity and the quality of artificial snow.

Laser attenuation in falling snow correlated with measurements of snow particle size distribution [PDF]

open access: yesOptical Engineering, 2021
We investigate transmission through falling snow using a 3D imaging lidar at 1.56-μm wavelength. The lidar is based on the time-correlated single-photon counting technique. Experimental transmission data are compared with Mie theory transmission calculations based on snow particle size distribution simultaneously measured with a laser disdrometer.

Size of snow particles in a powder-snow avalanche [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2011
AbstractLittle quantitative information is available concerning the size of ice particles in the turbulent clouds of powder-snow avalanches. To quantify particle size distributions, we have developed an experimental device that collects particles in real-scale powder avalanches.

Particle-Size Distribution of Pulverized Snow [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 1959
Abstract A microscopic method for the determination of particle-size distribution of pulverized snow was worked out. The method gives satisfactory distribution curves, presenting the number of particles as a function of their cross-sectional “areas”.

Influence of the melting temperature on the measurement of the mass concentration and size distribution of black carbon in snow [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Measurement Techniques, 2016
The influence of temperature and time of snow sample melting on the measurement of mass concentration and size distribution of black carbon (BC) in snow was evaluated experimentally.

Mass of different snow crystal shapes derived from fall speed measurements [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2021
Meteorological forecast and climate models require good knowledge of the microphysical properties of hydrometeors and the atmospheric snow and ice crystals in clouds, for instance, their size, cross-sectional area, shape, mass, and fall speed. Especially
