Emergent Spinning and Orbital Motion in Clustered Wind‐Assisted Flyers

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Inspired by natural snowflake geometries, paper‐cut flyers exhibit geometry‐defined spinning and orbital motions during cluster formation in a wind tunnel. Collective flights of multiple paperflakes reveal dynamic clustering, fragmentation, and continuously evolving spin behaviors.

Simulating ice layer formation under the presence of preferential flow in layered snowpacks [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere, 2016
For physics-based snow cover models, simulating the formation of dense ice layers inside the snowpack has been a long-time challenge. Their formation is considered to be tightly coupled to the presence of preferential flow, which is assumed to happen ...

‘Turkeys Cannot Vote for Christmas’: Why Epistemic Disobedience in an Anti‐Black World Matters

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Social Issues, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Never in the history of global coloniality has the idea of epistemic disobedience been as important as in the 21st century. This is not only because the struggle for decolonisation has shifted from physical confrontation between the coloniser and the colonised into a battle of ideas but also because the former has deployed the idea of ...

Spatially distributed simulations of the effect of snow on mass balance and flooding of Antarctic sea ice

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2021
Southern Ocean sea ice can exhibit widespread flooding and subsequent snow-ice formation, due to relatively thick snow covers compared to the total ice thickness.

Dye tracing of upward brine migration in snow

open access: yesAnnals of Glaciology
Salt is often present in the snow overlying seasonal sea ice, and has profound thermodynamic and electromagnetic effects. However, its provenance and behaviour within the snow remain uncertain. We describe two investigations tracing upward brine movement

Effects of snow physical parameters on spectral albedo and bidirectional reflectance of snow surface [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 2000
Observations of spectral albedo and bidirectional reflectance in the wavelength region of λ = 0.35–2.5 μm were made together with snow pit work on a flat snowfield in eastern Hokkaido, Japan. The effects of snow impurities, density, layer structure, and grain size attained by in situ and laboratory measurements were taken into account in snow models ...

Effects of intermittent exposure to hypobaria and cold on the microarchitecture and morphofunctional profile of rat gastrocnemius muscle

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Intermittent hypobaric hypoxia (IHH) enhances oxygen transport, muscle metabolism, and cardiovascular health; however, the combined effects of hypobaria and cold are less well understood. Exposure to these stressful environmental factors, even intermittently, can affect skeletal muscle due to its plasticity, thereby altering its metabolic and ...

Reducing the Cold Bias of the WRF Model Over the Tibetan Plateau by Implementing a Snow Coverage‐Topography Relationship and a Fresh Snow Albedo Scheme

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2023
Most climate models show systematic cold biases during snow‐covered period over the Tibetan Plateau (TP), which is associated with snow and surface albedo overestimations.

Precipitation biases and snow physics limitations drive the uncertainties in macroscale modeled snow water equivalent

open access: yesHydrology and Earth System Sciences, 2022
Abstract. Seasonal snow is an essential component of regional and global water and energy cycles, particularly in snow-dominant regions that rely on snowmelt for water resources. Land surface models (LSMs) are a common approach for developing spatially and temporally complete estimates of snow water equivalent (SWE) and hydrologic variables at a large ...

Most Upper Extremity Injuries in Elite Summer League Baseball Players Occur From Overuse, Affect the Shoulder, and Result in Missed Playing Time

open access: yesArthroscopy, Sports Medicine, and Rehabilitation, EarlyView.
Purpose To characterize the epidemiology of upper extremity injuries among elite college baseball players in 1 league over 5 seasons. Methods Deidentified arm injury reports were recorded from the 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023 Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL) seasons.
