A Dual‐Mode Photoconductive Colorimetric Wearable UV‐Dosimeter: Strategies for Tunable UV‐Band Sensitivity

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
The harmful ultraviolet component of sunlight necessitates reliable and wavelength‐selective personal UV monitoring technologies. Here, thermally evaporated CuBr thin films enable dual‐mode UV dosimetry through persistent photoconductive and colorimetric responses arising from charge trapping and surface oxide formation.

Probabilistic estimation of reliable sensor spacing for wire break detection in prestressed concrete using acoustic emission technique

open access: yesStructural Concrete, EarlyView.
Abstract The acoustic emission (AE) technique has proven to be an effective method for detecting individual wire breaks in prestressed concrete structures affected by stress corrosion cracking (SCC). However, despite its widespread application, the quantitative assessment of AE monitoring reliability and optimal sensor placement remains unresolved ...

“Bad Things Happen in Philadelphia”: Managing Stigma and Threats in the Wake of False Criminal Accusations

open access: yesSymbolic Interaction, EarlyView.
In the aftermath of the 2020 U.S. election, the boundary between activism and extremism blurred, with election officials reporting violent threats and false accusations of election fraud. From a symbolic interactionist perspective, these attacks provide a unique lens for examining the consequences of being falsely labeled a criminal.

The “We” and “Me” of Identity in Hazardous Industry Organizations: Face Work Tactics Among Practicing Engineers

open access: yesSymbolic Interaction, EarlyView.
In this paper, we use Goffman's notion of “face work” to examine how pipeline engineers perform and present their working selves as competent experts. Our analysis identifies various faces and face work tactics, including a focus on professional judgment, actively selling one's expertise relative to others, protective self‐deprecatory strategies, and ...

Monitoring snow depth from Sentinel-1 interferometry: Retrieving snow depth values from InSAR signal

open access: yes
Snow depth is a critical parameter for estimating potential water resources and predicting natural hazardssuch as avalanches. Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) as an active microwave remotesensing technique offers a promising method for ...
