SOAP 2.0: A tool to estimate the photometric and radial velocity variations induced by stellar spots and plages [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This paper presents SOAP 2.0, a new version of the SOAP code that estimates in a simple way the photometric and radial velocity variations induced by active regions. The inhibition of the convective blueshift inside active regions is considered, as well as the limb brightening effect of plages, a quadratic limb darkening law, and a realistic spot and ...

Improving the Thermoelectric Properties of Conjugated Polymer Thin Films by Dip Coating – but not through Alignment

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, EarlyView.
The study demonstrates that dip coating at lower speeds significantly enhances the thermoelectric performance of P3HT by improving electrical conductivity. Contrary to expectations, this improvement is seemingly not due to polymer alignment but rather to better structural order achieved during slower solvent evaporation at lower dip coating speeds ...

Symbolically burying the six million: post-war soap burial in Romania, Bulgaria and Brazil

open access: yesHuman Remains and Violence, 2016
During the Second World War and its aftermath, the legend was spread that the Germans turned the bodies of Holocaust victims into soap stamped with the initials RIF, falsely interpreted as made from pure Jewish fat. In the years following liberation, RIF

Investigation of the formation process of soap bubbles from soap film [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
In this paper, we study the formation process of a soap bubble by blowing soap film. Both bubble diameter and formation position were investigated in experiments. We found that the ratio between bubble size and soap film column is constant, and that the formation position increases linearly within a critical length-range. We used the theory of Rayleigh-

High‐Efficiency Optoelectronic Modulation in Quasi‐2D Perovskite‐Based Transistors for Neuromorphic Computing

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, EarlyView.
2‐thiophenemethylammonium (ThMA+) spacer cation‐based quasi‐2D (ThMA)2(MA)n‐1PbnI3n+1 (n = 4) photoelectric field‐effect transistors are developed, and its optoelectronic performance and neuromorphic computing are explored. Abstract Optoelectronic modulated transistors based on organic–inorganic halide perovskites can perceive and parse visual ...

Disks that are double spiral staircases [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2002
What are the possible shapes of various things and why? For instance, when a closed wire or a frame is dipped into a soap solution and is raised up from the solution, the surface spanning the wire is a soap film. What are the possible shapes of soap films and why? Or, for instance, why is DNA like a double spiral staircase? ``What..?'' and ``why..?''

All Organic Fully Integrated Neuromorphic Crossbar Array

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, EarlyView.
In this work, the first fully integrated crossbar array of electrochemical random‐access memory (ECRAM) that is composed entirely of organic materials is represented. This array can perform inference and in situ parallel training and is capable of classifying linearly separable 2D and 3D classification tasks with high accuracy.

Hybrid Plasmonic Nanorods/VO2 Photodetectors Sensitive to Short‐Wave Infrared Photons with Fast Response

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, EarlyView.
Together with the low external DC bias required (0.5V) and the fast response speed (trise down to 14 ms), the present hybrid plasmonic‐VO2 thin film photodetectors suggest a viable approach toward the development of effective photodetection in the SWIR spectrum.

A modified mean curvature flow in Euclidean space and soap bubbles in symmetric spaces [PDF]

open access: yesGeometriae Dedicata vol. 195 (2018) 1-17, 2015
In this paper, we show that small spherical soap bubbles in irreducible simply connected symmetric spaces of rank greater than one are constructed from the limits of a certain kind of modified mean curvature flows starting from small spheres in the Euclidean space of dimension equal to the rank of the symmetric space, where we note that the small ...

Printable Carbon‐Based Thermogalvanic Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Energy and Sustainability Research, EarlyView.
The performance of printable active carbon as the electrodes of thermogalvanic cells is investigated. The maximum output power can be doubled by multilayer printing of the electrode, which reduces the internal resistance of the cell. Thermogalvanic cells (TGCs) can convert low‐grade heat directly into electricity through reversible redox reactions ...
