The Simmelian call for a formal sociology is applied to aloneness to uncover generic patterns of relation between the individual and the community. Three forms of aloneness are distinguished by focusing on the interactional and relational levels of sociation underlying each. Other‐imposed aloneness as represented by isolation is an asymmetric form.

This chapter sets out the value theoretical foundation of the capitalist economy from the point of view of a Marxist—Hegelian philosophy. Evidence from previous studies is interpreted in terms of introjection as the learning of self‐reactions from the reaction of others. This is a form of learning which differs from others in that it is more permanent, generalizes to all situations, and exists in conflict with the rest of the personality.
