Destructive disinfection of infected brood prevents systemic disease spread in ant colonies
In social groups, infections have the potential to spread rapidly and cause disease outbreaks. Here, we show that in a social insect, the ant Lasius neglectus, the negative consequences of fungal infections (Metarhizium brunneum) can be mitigated by ...

Superorganism Immunity: A Major Transition in Immune System Evolution
Social insect colonies can express adaptive, organism-like design. In some cases, colonies so resemble a unique, cohesive and integrated “individual” that they are termed superorganisms.

Social immunity as a source of sustainable development of the regional economy [PDF]
At present, the problems of sustainable economic development still remain relevant for many regions. This research presents the idea that the stability of the territorial economy and the socially safe state of society are interrelated. The hypothesis was

Organoids in pediatric cancer research
Organoid technology has revolutionized cancer research, yet its application in pediatric oncology remains limited. Recent advances have enabled the development of pediatric tumor organoids, offering new insights into disease biology, treatment response, and interactions with the tumor microenvironment.

Vector Potential of Nosema-Infected Drones in Honey Bees
Despite the advantages associated with social living, one of the main costs of sociality is an increased exposure to pathogens. For honey bees, these costs are artificially inflated in the unnatural and densely crowded apiary environments common to ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Transgenerational Social Stress, Immune Factors, Hormones, and Social Behavior [PDF]
A social signal transduction theory of depression has been proposed that states that exposure to social adversity alters the immune response and these changes mediate symptoms of depression such as anhedonia and impairments in social behavior The exposure of maternal rats to the chronic social stress (CSS) of a male intruder depresses maternal care and
