Their unique perspective enables them to detect problems in the social lives of their pupils that may not be immediately visible to peers, parents or mental health professionals.

Pastoral Care and Social Justice: In the Perspective of Balance of Power
인간의 죄성에 초점을 둔 정의(justice)는 은혜의 자원에 초점을 둔 목회적 돌봄과 대조를 이룬다. 힘의 균형을 정의라 규정할 때, 목회적 돌봄과 상담은 공감적 경청을 통해 내담자들에게 힘을 북돋아줌으로써 정의를 실천하는 행위라 할 수 있다. 그러므로 목회적 돌봄과 상담을 통한 개인적 격려는 사회적 정의를 온전하게 하는 전인적 완성의 행위이다. 정의는 목회적 돌봄에 방향을 제공하고, 목회적 돌봄은 사회 정의에 개인적 차원의 시각을 제공함으로써 정의가 온전해질 수 있기 때문이다. 따라서 정의는 개인적 차원의 사랑을 포함하는 것이어야 하고, 목회적 돌봄은 사회적 권력에 대한 비평적 해석을 포괄하는 것이어야한다.
