Gender Matters! Analyzing Global Cultural Gender Preferences for Venues Using Social Sensing

open access: yes, 2017
Gender differences is a phenomenon around the world actively researched by social scientists. Traditionally, the data used to support such studies is manually obtained, often through surveys with volunteers.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Social sensing the 2018 Kīlauea Volcanic eruption through community Facebook use

open access: yesVolcanica
There is a lack of understanding around the impacts and responses of communities receiving hazard and risk information during volcanic crises, but social media posts may be able to provide valuable insights.

Machine Understanding of Human Behavior [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
A widely accepted prediction is that computing will move to the background, weaving itself into the fabric of our everyday living spaces and projecting the human user into the foreground. If this prediction is to come true, then next generation computing,

Mechanisms of IgE‐mediated food allergy and the role of allergen‐specific B cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Food allergy arises when allergen‐specific B cells preferentially produce immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies against harmless foods. This article explains the mechanisms driving IgE‐mediated reactions, highlights the central role of these B cells, and discusses how natural tolerance (NT) and oral immunotherapy (OIT) can reshape allergic immune responses.

A Transformer-Based Multimodal Model for Urban–Rural Fringe Identification

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing
As the frontier of urbanization, urban–rural fringes (URFs) transitionally connect urban construction regions to the rural hinterland, and its identification is significant for the study of urbanization-related socioeconomic changes and human ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.
