Minding the Gap: Bias, Soft Structures, and the Double Life of Social Norms [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
We argue that work on norms provides a way to move beyond debates between proponents of individualist and structuralist approaches to bias, oppression, and injustice. We briefly map out the geography of that debate before presenting Charlotte Witt’s view,

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Family policies in the context of low fertility and social structure

open access: yesDemographic Research, 2013
Objective: In this paper we investigate the effectiveness of family policies in the context of the socialstructure of a population. Methods: We use an agent-based model to analyse the impact of policies on individual fertility decisions and on fertility ...

Social Structures for Learning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
This article investigates what learning groups there are in organizations, other than the familiar 'communities of practice'. It first develops an interdisciplinary theoretical framework for identifying, categorizing and understanding learning groups ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

CLUSTERING OF UKRAINIAN REGIONS BASED ON VALUE ORIENTATIONS AND POLITICAL CHOICE OF THE POPULATIONS: METHODOLOGICAL RATIONALE AND ANALYSIS USING COMBINING DATA SOURCES

open access: yesEconomy and Sociology, 2019
The aim of this study is clustering of administrative-territorial units of Ukraine on the basis of value orientations and the electoral choice of the population of these units. The k-means method is used.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Social Structures and Global Public Health Ethics

open access: yesJournal of Moral Theology, 2021
The author relies on critical realist social theory because it provides an account of social reality that enables global public health ethicists to understand the causal mechanisms that perpetuate the suffering of the poor.

Langages structurés et lien social

open access: yesTic & Société, 2010
In this article, the authors propose a critical approach to interactivity through the use of markup languages and application frameworks. For twenty years, these languages have been reorganizing how interactivity is laid out in the development of ...
