Influence of Money Distribution on Civil Violence Model
We study the influence of money distribution on the dynamics of Epstein’s model of civil violence. For this, we condition the hardship parameter distributed according to the distribution of money, which is a local parameter that determines the dynamics of the model of civil violence.

ABSTRACT Complex system models of attitudes, such as the Hierarchical Ising Opinion Model (HIOM), suggest that a person's involvement in an attitude object could be linked to attitude extremity and polarization. Despite its potential to integrate various theories of attitude change and despite the implications it could hold for attitude research, this ...

Voter-like Dynamics with Conflicting Preferences on Modular Networks
Two of the main factors shaping an individual’s opinion are social coordination and personal preferences, or personal biases. To understand the role of those and that of the topology of the network of interactions, we study an extension of the voter ...

Contingency, crises & disasters: Broadening the research agenda
Abstract The idea of contingency emphasizes uncertainty, the consequences of choice as well as our dependence on persons and events outside our control and ability to comprehend. The concept is thus integral to how we define and understand disasters and crises. Yet the way in which contingency informs research agendas is often restricted to a dialectic

Researchers have suggested that the ability of male primates to emit long‐distance vocalizations is energetically costly and potentially incurring important adaptive consequences upon the calling individuals. Here, we present the first preliminary data on captive orangutan (Pongo spp.) nocturnal long calls, generated at the Indianapolis Zoo.

Tipping Points in Opinion Dynamics: A Universal Formula in Five Dimensions
A universal formula is shown to predict the dynamics of public opinion including eventual sudden and unexpected outbreaks of minority opinions within a generic parameter space of five dimensions. The formula is obtained by combining and extending several

The retirement transition has been associated with a decrease in total physical activity (PA). However, little is known about effective interventions to counteract this decrease. Prior to designing interventions, more information is needed about the changes in PA and in determinants of PA around this life change.
