Co-encapsulation of Daphnia magna and microalgae in silica matrices, a stepping stone toward a portable microcosm [PDF]
We report on the first silica encapsulation of a metazoan (Daphnia magna), with a high initial viability (96% of the population remained active 48 h after encapsulation).

3D Bioprinting of Thick Adipose Tissues with Integrated Vascular Hierarchies
An advanced 3D bioprinting technique is used here to create thick adipose tissues with a central, vessel and extensive branching. The construct is made using alginate, gelatin and collagen‐based bioinks. Flow through the complex vessel network is demonstrated as well as its successful integration with a femoral artery following implantation in a rat ...

Diffusion of Oligonucleotides from within Iron-Crosslinked Polyelectrolyte-Modified Alginate Beads: A Model System for Drug Release [PDF]
We developed and experimentally verified an analytical model to describe diffusion of oligonucleotides from stable hydrogel beads. The synthesized alginate beads are Fe3+-cross-linked as well as polyelectrolyte-doped for uniformity and stability at physiological pH.

A note on the effect of calcium alginate coating on quality of refrigerated strawberries. [PDF]
peer-reviewedAn alginate-based edible coating was investigated for the preservation of the quality of strawberries during cold storage (5 °C). Strawberries were immersed, successively, in sodium alginate and calcium chloride solutions to generate a ...

Alginate reduces the increased uptake of cholesterol and glucose in overweight male subjects: a pilot study [PDF]
Dietary fibers are of particular interest in the prevention and management of obesity and consequent pathologies. Among the proposed mechanisms of action of fiber is the modulation of nutrient uptake from the small intestine.

Sodium alginate decreases the permeability of intestinal mucus
In the small intestine the nature of the environment leads to a highly heterogeneous mucus layer primarily composed of the MUC2 mucin. We set out to investigate whether the soluble dietary fibre sodium alginate could alter the permeability of the mucus layer. The alginate was shown to freely diffuse into the mucus and to have minimal effect on the bulk

Cell Membrane Vesicle Camouflaged Artificial Cells
Artificial cells camouflaged with a cell membrane vesicle coating are able to assemble into synthetic aggregates that exhibit rudimentary communication capabilities. Additionally, when these artificial cells are equipped with antioxidant capabilities, they are able to protect the intracellular homeostasis in HepG2 cells present in semi‐synthetic ...
