Controlling shell-side crystal nucleation in a gas-liquid membrane contactor for simultaneous ammonium bicarbonate recovery and biogas upgrading [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
A gas–liquid hollow fibre membrane contactor (HFMC) process has been introduced for carbon dioxide (CO2) separation from biogas where aqueous ammonia (NH3) is used to chemically enhance CO2 absorption and initiate heterogeneous nucleation of the reaction

From Waste to Value: Conversion of Calcium Sulfate to Vaterite via Carbon Capture and Storage

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a new concept for carbon management that relies on the carbonation of industrial gypsum waste and yields phase‐pure vaterite at ambient conditions without any additives. The obtained vaterite is further shown to be a reactive material that develops compressive strength in aqueous suspensions like conventional cements.

Dissolved oxygen sensing using an optical fibre long period grating coated with hemoglobin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
A long period grating fiber optic sensor coated with hemoglobin is used to detect dissolved oxygen. The sensitivity of this sensor to the ratio of dissolved carbon dioxide to dissolved oxygen is demonstrated via the conversion of carboxyhemoglobin to

Interconnected Porous Hydrogels with Tunable Anisotropy Through Aqueous Emulsion Bioprinting

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A 3D bioprintable microporous bioink is developed using an aqueous two‐phase system (ATPS) composed of extracellular matrix (ECM) mimetic biopolymers. The ATPS bioink enables the fabrication of interconnected porous architectures with up to 70% porosity, supporting long‐term cell viability and 3D cell alignment, enabling a simultaneous generation of ...

Chicken Breast Meat Marinated with Increasing Levels of Sodium Bicarbonate

open access: yesThe Journal of Poultry Science, 2014
The aim of this study was to test the effect of different sodium bicarbonate concentrations on marination performances and meat quality properties. A total of 203 samples were obtained from an homogenous batch of 24 h post mortem chicken breast meat and

Principal freshwater-types and comparative hydrochemistry of tropical running water systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 1985
Les résultats d'analyse d'eaux provenant de cours d'eau des régions tropicales humides (notamment des îles de l'Indo-Pacifique et d'Afrique de l'Ouest) sont discutés dans leur contexte géologique et climatique.

Sodium bicarbonate and high-intensity-cycling capacity: variability in responses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine whether gastrointestinal (GI) distress affects the ergogenicity of sodium bicarbonate and whether the degree of alkalaemia or other metabolic responses are different between individuals who improve exercise

RNA‐Micelles as Self‐Assembling Structures for Efficient Co‐Delivery of Synergistic siRNA and Nucleoside Analogues to Treat CRC Lung Metastasis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Two kinds of self‐assembled RNA micelles were used to co‐deliver synergistic siRNA and nucleoside analogues for the treatment of colorectal cancer lung metastases. Near‐complete elimination of lung cancer metastases was confirmed in an orthotopic lung metastasis model constructed using human colorectal cancer lung metastases patient surgical samples to

Accidental Chlorine Gas Exposure in a Pediatric Patient: A Case Report

open access: yesClinical Practice and Cases in Emergency Medicine, 2020
Introduction: Chlorine gas is a known irritant of the respiratory tract, which may cause damage to various systems depending on time of exposure and concentration of the gas. Current treatments are mainly supportive. While no definitive studies have been
