Morphology of the Zambezi River plume in the Sofala Bank, Mozambique

open access: yesWestern Indian Ocean Journal of Marine Science, 2015
In this paper, hydrographic data collected in the vicinity of the Zambezi River plume between 2004-2007 is discussed alongside historical data to infer the plume morphology. The sampling plan called for 73 CTD stations that were interspersed with sampling of shrimp recruitment.

The impact of internal waves on upper continental slopes: insights from the Mozambican margin (southwest Indian Ocean)

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 45, Issue 6, Page 1469-1482, May 2020., 2020
Internal waves are energetic processes capable of shaping continental slopes. Arrested internal waves by barotropic tidal currents may form channels. Bottom currents induced by internal solitary waves may generate upslope migrating dunes. Abstract Evidences of sedimentation affected by oceanic circulation, such as nepheloid layers and contourites are ...

Vertical Migration of Gold-spot Herring (Herklotsichthys quadrimaculatus) Larvae on Sofala Bank, Mozambique

open access: yesWestern Indian Ocean Journal of Marine Science, 2012
Vertical larval fish movement influences their survival and dispersal, hence recruitment variability. This study presents the vertical behaviour of gold-spot herring (Herklotsichthys quadrimaculatus) larvae observed on the Sofala Bank (Mozambique) throughout a 48-hour period when depth-stratified samples were taken every 2 h, together with CTD profiles,

TRY plant trait database – enhanced coverage and open access

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 26, Issue 1, Page 119-188, January 2020., 2020
Plant traits—the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants—determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people.

Role of mesoscale eddies in the biogeochemistry of the Mozambique Channel

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
This study aims to characterize how eddies shape the biogeochemistry of the Mozambique Channel using a physical-biogeochemical model that realistically simulates its interannual dynamics.

A report on a survey with the r/v "Ernst Haeckel" in July-August 1980: shallow-water shrimp and by-catch, oceanography [PDF]

open access: yes, 1983
A survey of the Sofala Bank (Mozambique) was conducted to: estimate the abundance of shallow-water shrimp in the area between 16 degree 20'S and 20 degree 20'S, from 5 to 100 meters; estimate the shallow-water shrimp species composition and distribution ...

Quantifying Mozambique's Peace Dividend: An Application of the Synthetic Control Method

open access: yesReview of Development Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Using the synthetic control method and data from 20 African countries, this study quantifies the peace dividend in Mozambique, a country that experienced over 15 years of civil war. More specifically, we use data from 1977 to 2018 to investigate whether the end of the civil war in Mozambique in 1992 brought significant benefits to the country ...

Impact of offshore eddies on shelf circulation and river plumes of the Sofala Bank, Mozambique Channel

open access: yesJournal of Marine Systems, 2018
Abstract A high-resolution, two-way nested Regional Ocean Modeling System, forced with monthly climatologies, has been set up for the Sofala Bank and adjacent deeper ocean of the Mozambique Channel to investigate the role of offshore mesoscale eddies on the shelf circulation, hydrographic structures and river plumes.

Mobility, Behaviour and Gender Nexus: Theoretical Perspectives on HIV Vulnerability in Fishing Communities in Sub‐Saharan African Countries

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 5, Issue 6, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Fishing communities in sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA) face elevated HIV vulnerability, driven by occupational mobility, socio‐economic marginalisation and gendered power dynamics. This qualitative review synthesises empirical studies and theoretical frameworks to examine how mobility, risky behaviours and health outcomes intersect in these ...
