A Bioinspired Soft Actuated Material

Advanced Materials, 2013
A class of soft actuated materials that can achieve lifelike motion is presented. By embedding pneumatic actuators in a soft material inspired by a biological muscle fibril architecture, and developing a simple finite element simulation of the same, tunable biomimetic motion can be achieved with fully soft structures, exemplified here by an active left

Mechanics of Soft Actuators

open access: yes, 2019
This dissertation explores the mechanics of three types of soft actuators experimentally, and theoretically: (i) dielectric elastomer transducers; (ii) fluid-driven actuators; (iii) paper actuators. The dissertation develops new control elements for these actuators, which extend their function, and enable the design of devices with entirely new ...

Microrobot actuated by soft actuators based on dielectric elastomer

IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and System, 2003
In this paper a microrobot, mimicking annelid animals like the earthworm, is presented. The robot is composed of several ring-like segments. Each segment is able to generate three degree-of-freedom motions such as pan/tilt/up-down respectively, and it is actuated by three soft actuators located equidistantly along the circumferential direction.

Soft Actuators for Small‐Scale Robotics

Advanced Materials, 2016
This review comprises a detailed survey of ongoing methodologies for soft actuators, highlighting approaches suitable for nanometer‐ to centimeter‐scale robotic applications. Soft robots present a special design challenge in that their actuation and sensing mechanisms are often highly integrated with the robot body and overall functionality.

All-soft material system for strong soft actuators

2018 IEEE International Conference on Soft Robotics (RoboSoft), 2018
In this paper, we present an improvement to a recently developed thermally responsive silicone-based actuator. The actuator is made of silicone with dispersed solvent droplets and expands when the droplets undergo a liquidgas phase transition, which is achieved at low voltages using an embedded Joule heater.

Actuators for Soft Robotics

2016
Although we do not know as yet how robots of the future will look like exactly, most of us are sure that they will not resemble the heavy, bulky, rigid machines dangerously moving around in old-fashioned industrial automation. There is a growing consensus, in the research community as well as in expectations from the public, that robots of the next ...
