Mass Timber Rocking Panel Retrofit of a Four-Story Soft-Story Building with Full-Scale Shake Table Validation

open access: yes, 2017
Soft-story wood-frame buildings have been recognized as a disaster preparedness problem for decades. There are tens of thousands of these multi-family three- and four-story structures throughout California and other cities in the United States.

The Soft Story Challenge to Architectural Design in Earthquake-Prone Areas

open access: yesJurnal Kejuruteraan, 2018
The stiffness of irregular configurations/soft storeys is the most frequent cause of structural failure in the irregular vertical part of a building when major earthquakes occur in Indonesia, leaving behind many victims.

Spin Hall Nano‐Antenna

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The spin Hall effect is a well‐known phenomenon in spintronics that has found numerous applications in digital electronics (memory and logic), but relatively few in analog electronics. Practically the only analog application in widespread use is the spin Hall nano‐oscillator (SHNO) that delivers a high frequency alternating current or voltage ...

Self‐Nitriding Nanostructured Transition Metal Nitrides in Architected‐Carbon Matrices: Unveiling Mechanisms and Advancing Performance in Lithium‐Sulfur Pouch Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Imidazolium PIL nanoparticles, as an N‐rich template and morphology director, enable a colloidal self‐nitriding route to TMNs (VN, Mo2N) within controlled solid/hollow carbon architectures. As sulfur hosts/additives, TMNs accelerate Li–S redox kinetics and support high‐loading cathodes.

Multimodal Wearable Biosensing Meets Multidomain AI: A Pathway to Decentralized Healthcare

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Multimodal biosensing meets multidomain AI. Wearable biosensors capture complementary biochemical and physiological signals, while cross‐device, population‐aware learning aligns noisy, heterogeneous streams. This Review distills key sensing modalities, fusion and calibration strategies, and privacy‐preserving deployment pathways that transform ...

Seismic Upgrading of Frame Structures with a Soft First Story by Using Hysteretic Dampers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Soft stories constitute a major reason for building collapses during severe earthquakes. The present study investigates a solution for the seismic upgrade of existing reinforced (RC) concrete frames with open first story and masonry infills at the upper ...
