Strengthening of reinforced concrete buildings with soft story irregularity
Materials Testing, 2019Abstract Turkey is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. The studies on the damaged buildings with reinforced concrete structural systems, especially done after the 1999 Gölcük earthquake and other earthquakes in the past, showed that the negative effects of the structural irregularities in the buildings come to light ...

Pounding of San Francisco–Type Soft-Story Midblock Buildings
Earthquake Spectra, 2013Presented is a study into the effects of pounding on the collapse performance of midblock wood-frame soft-story buildings. This study analyzed various pounding situations and found that it can change the collapse risk when compared to the risk of the same building having no adjacent buildings (no-pounding).

Engineering structures, 2018
This paper aims to propose an innovative braced frame named hexa-braced frame for the improvement of the seismic response of conventional steel-braced frames. In the proposed system, vertical structural elements connect the V and inverted-V bracings over

Pounding of San Francisco-Type Soft-Story Corner Buildings
Earthquake Spectra, 2012We investigated 1920s-era four-story wood-frame corner buildings common to San Francisco, many of which were damaged in the city's Marina District during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Such buildings can have relatively weak and flexible first stories and are referred to as soft-story buildings. We calibrated two building computer models to simulate

Effect of variation on infill masonry walls in the seismic performance of soft story RC building
Australian Journal of Structural Engineering, 2018This paper investigates the influence of variation on infill masonry wall extent in the seismic performance of low-rise reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. The recent Gorkha earthquake of 2015 in Nepal (MW 7.8) depicted that the infill masonry walls play

Soft stories?an appropriate choice for failure theory
The Structural Design of Tall Buildings, 2000A critical review of the of the present approach to the soft story effect during major earthquakes leads to the conclusion that any method based on the usual first theory of failure (assuming that the failure occurs due to high normal stresses) is not adequate and can not predict the failure of soft stories.

Informing a Retrofit Ordinance: A Soft-Story Case Study
Structures Congress 2012, 2012The San Francisco Community Action Plan for Seismic Safety (CAPSS), among other tasks, addressed the threat that regional earthquakes pose to 4,400 older, soft-story, highoccupancy woodframe residential buildings, like the apartment buildings that collapsed in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.

Experimental Seismic Collapse Study of a Full-Scale, 4-Story, Soft-Story, Wood-Frame Building
Journal of Architectural Engineering, 2015AbstractIn the San Francisco Bay Area and throughout much of California, there are a large number of wood-frame buildings with garage space at ground level, resulting in open fronts on one or two sides. This type of geometry results in a soft and weak first story, and buildings of this archetype are generally referred to as soft-story buildings. During

Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis of Soft-Story Light-Frame Wood Buildings
Structures Congress 2012, 2012Many older multi-story woodframe buildings in the United States were not designed according to the earthquake engineering principles. Most of these older buildings have a soft first story due to the existence of large garage doors or retail store window openings.
