Distinctive ionic transport of freshly excised human epileptogenic brain tissue [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Physics Letters, 119, 253701 (2021), 2022
Epileptogenic lesions have higher concentrations of sodium than does normal brain tissue. Such lesions are palpably recognized by a surgeon and then excised in order to eliminate epileptic seizures with their associated abnormal electrical behavior. Here we study the frequency-dependent electrical conductivities of lesion-laden tissues excised from the

Geometric signatures of tissue surface tension in a three-dimensional model of confluent tissue [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
In dense biological tissues, cell types performing different roles remain segregated by maintaining sharp interfaces. To better understand the mechanisms for such sharp compartmentalization, we study the effect of an imposed heterotypic tension at the interface between two distinct cell types in a fully 3D model for confluent tissues.

Towards real-time finite-strain anisotropic thermo-visco-elastodynamic analysis of soft tissues for thermal ablative therapy [PDF]

open access: yesComputer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine, vol. 198, pp. 105789, 2021, 2020
Accurate and efficient prediction of soft tissue temperatures is essential to computer-assisted treatment systems for thermal ablation. It can be used to predict tissue temperatures and ablation volumes for personalised treatment planning and image-guided intervention.

Autonomous Soft Tissue Retraction Using Demonstration-Guided Reinforcement Learning [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
In the context of surgery, robots can provide substantial assistance by performing small, repetitive tasks such as suturing, needle exchange, and tissue retraction, thereby enabling surgeons to concentrate on more complex aspects of the procedure.

Ultrasonic Estimation of Soft Tissue Visco Elastic Properties [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
Conventional imaging of diagnostic ultrasound is widely used. Although it makes the differences in the soft tissues echogenicities' apparent and clear, it fails in describing and estimating the soft tissue mechanical properties. It cannot portray their mechanical properties, such as the elasticity and stiffness.

Strain stiffening universality in composite hydrogels and soft tissues [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Soft biological tissues exhibit a remarkable resilience to large mechanical loads, a property which is associated with the strain stiffening capability of the biopolymer networks that structurally support the tissues. Yet, recent studies have shown that composite systems such as tissues and blood clots exhibit mechanical properties that contradict ...

A Variational Beam Model for Failure of Cellular and Truss‐Based Architected Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView., 2023
Herein, a versatile and efficient beam modeling framework is developed to predict the nonlinear response and failure of cellular, truss‐based, and woven architected materials. It enables the exploration of their design space and the optimization of their mechanical behavior in the nonlinear regime. A variational formulation of a beam model is presented

Cell‐free DNA aneuploidy score as a dynamic early response marker in prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
mFast‐SeqS‐based genome‐wide aneuploidy scores are concordant with aneuploidy scores obtained by whole genome sequencing from tumor tissue and can predict response to ARSI treatment at baseline and, at an early time point, to ARSI and taxanes. This assay can be easily performed at low cost and requires little input of cfDNA. Cell‐free circulating tumor

TOMM20 as a driver of cancer aggressiveness via oxidative phosphorylation, maintenance of a reduced state, and resistance to apoptosis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
TOMM20 increases cancer aggressiveness by maintaining a reduced state with increased NADH and NADPH levels, oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), and apoptosis resistance while reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. Conversely, CRISPR‐Cas9 knockdown of TOMM20 alters these cancer‐aggressive traits.
