Strategic directions in software engineering and programming languages [PDF]

open access: yesACM Computing Surveys, 1996
The computer revolution is based on the ability of a general-purpose machine to carry out a specific task under the control of special-purpose software. While the wide applicability of stock hardware has driven demand up and manufacturing cost per unit dramatically down, the same trends have led to increasing demand for ever more complex software for ...

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...

Issues in Chinese Requirements Specifications: Insights from Survey Data and Static Analysis

open access: yesJOIV: International Journal on Informatics Visualization
Requirements engineering is crucial for software project success. Issues like requirements ambiguity, inconsistency, and unverifiability contribute to unclear, conflicting, or untestable specifications, which can undermine the effectiveness and success ...

Hyperosmotic stress‐induced redistribution of pre‐mRNA cleavage factor I subunits is associated with shifts in alternative polyadenylation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Hyperosmotic stress triggers the relocation of the CFIm complex from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. This shift creates a nuclear ‘stoichiometric bottleneck’, limiting CFIm availability for mRNA processing. Consequently, specific mRNAs like NUDT21 and DICER1 undergo targeted 3′UTR shortening, demonstrating how spatial protein dynamics drive rapid ...

Pathways and pitfalls: a qualitative study of student experiences in biomedical science education

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Biomedical science students from underrepresented backgrounds face barriers including financial strain, disrupted laboratory access and cultural exclusion. Peer networks provide vital support when institutional systems are difficult to navigate. To create inclusive learning environments and achieve academic success, educators should blend active, hands‐

Machine Learning Techniques for Requirements Engineering: A Comprehensive Literature Review

open access: yesSoftware
Software requirements engineering is one of the most critical and time-consuming phases of the software-development process. The lack of communication with stakeholders and the use of natural language for communicating leads to misunderstanding and ...

Effect of terahertz irradiation on DNA damage repair in living cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We investigated the effect of terahertz (THz) wave irradiation on DNA double‐strand break (DSB) repair in living cells. We found that THz irradiation enhanced DSB repair at specific frequencies, whereas heat treatment inhibited it, indicating that this effect is nonthermal and frequency‐specific.

The impact of software engineering research on modern programming languages [PDF]

open access: yesACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology, 2005
Software engineering research and programming language design have enjoyed asymbioticrelationship, with traceable impacts since the 1970s, when these areas were first distinguished from one another. This report documents this relationship by focusing on several major features of current programming languages: data and procedural abstraction, types ...

Language design for meta-programming in the software composition domain

open access: yes, 2009
How would a language look like that is specially designed for solving meta-programming problems in the software composition domain? We present requirements for and design of Rascal, a new language for solving meta-programming problems that fit the ...
