Software Maintainability: Perceptions of EDP Professionals

MIS Quarterly, 1988
Software maintenance continues to be one of the most complex problems facing much of the software industry. This study examines EDP professionals’ perceptions of what makes software maintainable. Perceptions were assessed through a series of factor analyses on the data collected from a survey of 149 professionals from 20 organizations of varying sizes.

Static software metrics for reliability and maintainability

Proceedings of the 2018 International Conference on Technical Debt, 2018
This paper identifies a small, essential set of static software code metrics linked to the software product quality characteristics of reliability and maintainability and to the most commonly identified sources of technical debt. An open-source plug-in is created for the Understand code analysis tool that calculates and visualizes these metrics.

Measuring the maintainability of open-source software

2005 International Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering, 2005., 2005
An editorial in empirical software engineering suggested that open-source software projects offer a great deal of data that can be used for experimentation. These data include artifacts such as source code and defect reports. In this paper we show that sources of open-source maintenance data, such as defect-tracking systems, change logs, and source ...

The prediction ability of experienced software maintainers

Proceedings of the Fourth European Conference on Software Maintenance and Reengineering, 2002
Reports an empirical study of 109 randomly selected maintenance tasks in a large Norwegian software organization. When the maintainers had understood the maintenance task specifications, we asked whether they knew how to solve the task. A high confidence in knowing how to solve the task meant that the maintainers did not expect any major difficulties ...

Maintaining verified software

Proceedings of the 2013 ACM SIGPLAN symposium on Haskell, 2013
Maintaining software in the face of evolving dependencies is a challenging problem, and in addition to good release practices there is a need for automatic dependency analysis tools to avoid errors creeping in. Verified software reveals more semantic information in the form of mechanized proofs of functional specifications, and this can be used for ...

Maintaining software systems

Data Processing, 1984
Abstract Maintenance of current systems is one of the biggest problems facing DP management. The paper describes a technique: design by objectives, which can be used by systems designers to develop a system with good maintenance characteristics.

Producing maintainable software

Computers & Industrial Engineering, 1987
Abstract The increasing cost of software maintenance has resulted in greater emphasis on the production of maintainable software. One method used to enhance the development of maintainable software is to employ complexity metrics as a technique for controlling software complexity. In order to control complexity, it is imperative to plan for increases

Maintaining telephone switching software requirements

IEEE Communications Magazine, 2002
We discuss how telephony software requirements should be structured to reduce maintenance costs. "Feature interaction" problems have become a serious obstacle to add more features to telephone switches. We show why existing public switched telephone networks are hard to modify.
