SOHO/SUMER observations of prominence oscillation before eruption [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2008
Coronal mass ejections (CMEs), as a large-scale eruptive phenomenon, often reveal some precursors in the initiation phase, e.g., X-ray brightening, filament darkening, etc, which are useful for CME modeling and space weather forecast. With the SOHO/SUMER spectroscopic observations of the 2000 September 26 event, we propose another precursor for CME ...

Spectroscopic Signatures of a Flare Observed by SUMER Onboard SOHO [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 2001
We report on EUV observations of a solar limb flare obtained by the SUMER spectrometer. A time series was taken with fixed slit position and several spectral windows that covered a wide temperature range (104-107 K), preceded and followed by contextual raster scans in a He I line. During the time series, a C4.6 flare occurred in the region, also imaged

A study of opacity in SOHO-SUMER and SOHO-CDS spectral observations [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2002
The assumptions underpinning escape probability and absorption factor methods for describing spectral emission from optically thick plasmas, are addressed to test the range of validity of the associated expressions and to develop them for use within non-stratified atmospheres which include plasma flow and line blending.

Time series study of EUV spicules observed by SUMER/SoHO [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2005
Here we study the dynamic properties of EUV spicules seen at the solar limb. The selected data were obtained as time series in polar coronal holes by SUMER/SoHO. The short exposure time and the almost fixed position of the spectrometer's slit allow the analysis of spicule properties such as occurrence, lifetime and Doppler velocity.

SOHO/SUMER Results: Mass Flows [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 2004
Hardly any part of the chromosphere and the low corona of the Sun is in a static state. Spectrographs reveal line shifts and nonthermal broadening indicating mass supply to the corona, draining of coronal material, syphon flows, wave propagation and more.

Determination of the 3D structure of an EUV-filament observed by SoHO/CDS, SoHO/SUMER and VTT/MSDP [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2004
Heinzel et al. (2001) found that filaments seem to be much more extended in EUV spectral lines than in Hα. In this paper we reconstruct the 3D structure of the extensions of the EUV-filament observed on 15 October 1999 by SoHO/CDS and SoHO/SUMER. Small Ha structures were observed by VTT/MSDP.

SUMER/SOHO Filament Observations in Selected Lyman Lines [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Astronomical Union Colloquium, 1998
AbstractOn September 21, 1996 a filament located in a region close to an enhanced network was observed with the SOHO SUMER and CDS instruments. Four Lyman lines have been detected (Lδ, Lϵ, L-6, L-7) by SUMER in the raster mode. We have corrected the spectral data for flatfield and destreching and made wavelength and absolute intensity calibrations.

SOHO CDS and SUMER observations of quiescent filaments and their interpretation [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2004
Three quiescent filaments located at different positions on the solar disk were selected from the SOHO CDS data archive: one of them was also observed by SUMER in the raster mode. We investigate the filament-corona transition region (PCTR) emission, to determine whether it is indeed negligible, as found in one previously-analysed case. The observations

Solar hydrogen-Lyman continuum observations with SOHO/SUMER [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2005
In this work we analyze the emission of the H Lyman continuum (HI LyC) in the Quiet Sun (QS) and a solar prominence, in order to derive information on the temperature of the emitting plasma. We used the spectral atlas obtained with SOHO/SUMER detector A in 1999 (Parenti et al. 2005, A&A, 443, 679). The high spectral resolution of this instrument allows
