The assumptions underpinning escape probability and absorption factor methods for describing spectral emission from optically thick plasmas, are addressed to test the range of validity of the associated expressions and to develop them for use within non-stratified atmospheres which include plasma flow and line blending.

Time series study of EUV spicules observed by SUMER/SoHO [PDF]
Here we study the dynamic properties of EUV spicules seen at the solar limb. The selected data were obtained as time series in polar coronal holes by SUMER/SoHO. The short exposure time and the almost fixed position of the spectrometer's slit allow the analysis of spicule properties such as occurrence, lifetime and Doppler velocity.

SOHO/SUMER Results: Mass Flows [PDF]
Hardly any part of the chromosphere and the low corona of the Sun is in a static state. Spectrographs reveal line shifts and nonthermal broadening indicating mass supply to the corona, draining of coronal material, syphon flows, wave propagation and more.

Abstract Using solar wind and ground magnetometer data for solar cycles 23–25, extreme‐value power‐law models are developed that quantify relationships between near‐Earth solar wind speed and Sun‐to‐Earth transit times of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs).

Determination of the 3D structure of an EUV-filament observed by SoHO/CDS, SoHO/SUMER and VTT/MSDP [PDF]
Heinzel et al. (2001) found that filaments seem to be much more extended in EUV spectral lines than in Hα. In this paper we reconstruct the 3D structure of the extensions of the EUV-filament observed on 15 October 1999 by SoHO/CDS and SoHO/SUMER. Small Ha structures were observed by VTT/MSDP.
