Aggregate hierarchy in soils

Australian Journal of Soil Research, 1991
An Alfisol, a Mollisol and an Oxisol were fractionated into different particle sizes after a range of disaggregating treatments from gentle to vigorous. The Alfisol and the Mollisol appeared to break down in steps; macroaggregates >250 µm diameter breaking down to microaggregates 20-250 µm diameter before particles <20 µm were released ...

Soil aggregation and soil aggregate stability regulate organic carbon and nitrogen storage in a red soil of southern China

Journal of Environmental Management, 2020
Soil aggregation plays a critical role in the maintenance of soil structure, as well as in its productivity. Fertilization influences soil aggregation, especially by regulating soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) contents in aggregate fractions.

Aggregation and Aggregate Stability in Forest and Range Soils

Soil Science Society of America Journal, 1988
Abstract A simple method for measuring aggregation and aggregate stability across soils of widely varying structure and texture is presented. The method uses standard techniques of particle‐size analysis to measure yield of fine particles (<26‐µm estimated spherical diam.) after three types of dispersion treatments: shaking in ...

Effect of soil aggregation on the biodegradation of phenanthrene aged in soil

Environmental Pollution, 2003
A study was conducted to determine the possible role of soil aggregates in the sequestration of phenanthrene and thus in the declined biodegradation of the hydrocarbon. Phenanthrene aged in Lima loam (2-mm aggregates) showed declined biodegradation with time of aging to the test bacterium P5-2 capable of using sorbed phenanthrene.

Chromium Diffusion and Reduction in Soil Aggregates

Environmental Science & Technology, 2001
The distribution of metal contaminants such as chromium in soils can be strongly localized by transport limitations and redox gradients within soil aggregates. Measurements of Cr(VI) diffusion and reduction to Cr(III) were obtained in soil columns representing transects into soil aggregates in order to quantify influences of organic carbon (OC) and ...

Dynamics of Soil Aggregation

1966
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the factors and mechanisms governing the formation and destruction of water-stable soil aggregates. The formation and degradation of water-stable aggregates comprise a complex interrelationship of physical, biological, and chemical reactions.

Soil aggregation in the seedbed: A review. I. Properties of aggregates and beds of aggregates

Soil and Tillage Research, 1989
Tillage improves soil conditions for plant growth by altering the aggregate size distribution which affects the mechanical, physical and agronomic properties of the soil. Properties of individual aggregates and how these relate to seedbed performance are reviewed.

Soil Aggregation in Relation to Various Soil Constituents

Soil Science Society of America Journal, 1957
Abstract The relative importance of diverse factors affecting aggregation in four Wisconsin soil types was studied by multiple regression analyses. Single and combined effects of pH and contents of organic matter, microbial gum, clay, and free iron oxide were considered.
