SOIL MOISTURE AND THE ECOLOGY OF SOIL FUNGI
Biological Reviews, 1963SummarySome basic concepts concerning soil physical factors have been briefly discussed. The importance of evaluation of the total soil moisture stress, as indicative of the energy which must be used by an organism to gain water from the soil, is shown.

The fungal flora of similar horizons in eight different chalk soils was investigated by the dilution plate method. Penicillium nigricans, Mortierella alpina and M. minutissima were abundant in the majority of the soils. Other species, including Spicaria sp. and Paecilomyces sp., were confined to a single locality.

Publisher Summary Methods for analyzing soil fungi may be broadly classified as direct and indirect. With direct techniques, attempts are made to establish the presence of fungi and their relationship to the environment by direct observation. This can be done most simply by mounting and staining soil particles and studying them under the microscope ...
