Soil heat flux is sometimes ignored because its magnitude is often small relative to the other terms in the energy balance equation. The daily and yearly sums are normally near zero, but daily values can be significant when the soil is heating in the spring or cooling in the fall.

Soil heat flux determination: a null-alignment method
Agricultural Meteorology, 1975Abstract A new technique for computing soil heat flux was developed which is based on measurements of only temperature and moisture content of the upper 20 cm of soil. First, calorimetry is used to calculate an initial estimate of the soil heat flux from an initial estimate for the thermal conductivity at 20 cm.

Soil heat flux and temperature variation with vegetation, soil type and climate
Agricultural and Forest Meteorology, 1987Abstract Radiation, soil temperature at several depths and soil heat flux were measured in the U.K. and Syria. Diurnal variations are illustrated for areas of vegetation ranging from dense coniferous forest to bare soil. The soil heat flux is shown to be an important component of the surface energy balance, especially where ground cover is sparse, as

Abstract —It is common that surface energy balance is not closure for many land surface types. The reasons to affect energy balance include several aspects. This paper uses three methods to correct soil heat flux based on the data from Xiaotangshan experiment, Beijing, 2004. It also compares energy balance closure ratio between every method.

Calibration of soil heat flux transducers
Theoretical and Applied Climatology, 1990Soil heat flux transducer calibration, according to theory, is influenced by the thermal conductivity difference between the transducer and the calibration medium and the geometry of the transducer. This study was conducted to compare the influence of these parameters on the calibration factors of two types of commercial soil heat flux transducers with
