The composition of the microflora in different layers of four representative oil profiles of Sudan were studied. Counts of all types of microorganisms decreased significantly with depth in soil. Azotobacter, in particular, occurred in high densities; representative strains were isolated and studied for their different characteristics.

Microbiological Studies of Arctic Soils

A woolgrass (Scirpus cyperinus (L.) Kunth) community in Juneau County, Wisconsin was studied by means of belt transects in August, 1951. Species composition and cover values for a total of 35 stand samples were recorded. Units based on a field technique of recording data by samples of physiognomic homogeneity revealed a very definite structure.
