All-Season Liquid Soil Moisture Retrieval From SMAP
In cold regions, the coexistence and interconversion of liquid water and ice in frozen soils have important implications for energy partitioning and surface runoff at the Earth's surface.

The role of soil moisture in the inland penetration of Indian monsoon low‐pressure systems
We use the Advanced Weather Research and Forecasting model to examine the role of soil moisture in the inland penetration of Indian monsoon low‐pressure systems (LPSs). We find that LPSs penetrate deeply into India despite a dry land surface; however, their inland penetration is adversely affected when there is a reduction in the total surface heat ...

Calibration of the SMAP Soil Moisture Retrieval Algorithm to Reduce Bias Over the Amazon Rainforest
Soil moisture (SM) is crucial for the Earth's ecosystem, impacting climate and vegetation health. Obtaining in situ observations of SM is labor-intensive and complex, particularly in remote and densely vegetated regions like the Amazon rainforest. NASA's

This work demonstrates the potential of the assimilation of satellite solar‐induced fluorescence (SIF) retrievals at eight‐day and 0.1° resolutions in the integrated forecast system (IFS), developed at the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), at global scale, to provide a more realistic representation of the vegetation temporal ...

Covariance of the intertropical discontinuity and African easterly jet in Sahelian wet and dry years
Intertropical discontinuity and African easterly jet (AEJ) positions are strongly correlated, with a more pronounced linear relationship across wet years. Surface heat flux anomalies modify low‐level temperature and sensible heat flux gradients that shift the AEJ core south of the gradient maxima in both composites.

The change in the frequency of wet spells in tropical Australia in summer primarily contributes to the change in precipitation between wet and dry years. In the extratropics, both the frequency and intensity of wet spells are important, especially in winter.

Temporal Variability Corrections for Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer E (AMSR-E) Surface Soil Moisture: Case Study in Little River Region, Georgia, U.S. [PDF]
Statistical correction methods, the Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF) matching technique and Regional Statistics Method (RSM) are applied to adjust the limited temporal variability of Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer E (AMSR-E) data using the ...

The study evaluates five factors affecting the assimilation of surface‐sensitive Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit‐A (AMSU‐A) radiances over land, including the simultaneous estimation of surface emissivity and the standard set of state variables, to improve numerical weather prediction (NWP) at Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

Accomplishments of the NASA Johnson Space Center portion of the soil moisture project in fiscal year 1981 [PDF]
The NASA/JSC ground scatterometer system was used in a row structure and row direction effects experiment to understand these effects on radar remote sensing of soil moisture.
