MSc (Crop Science), North-West University, Mahikeng Campus Nightshades (commonly referred to as African and/or Black nightshade) comprise several species within a section of the genus Solanum. There are 30 species reported in the section in the world, and about 12 species are found in Africa.

Resistance to Erwinia spp. in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.)
Blackleg is a disease of potato, Solanum tuberosum , which is caused by the bacteria Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora ( Ecc ), E.c. subsp. atroseptica ( Eca ) or E . chrysanthemi (Ech). Incidence of blackleg negatively affects the quality of seed potatoes. Disease control relies on phytosanitary measures aiming to reduce the spread of the pathogen.
