Abstract Solar oscillation frequencies have become an important tool to obtain detailed information about the solar interior. The physical nature of the oscillations is well understood: the modes observed so far are standing acoustic waves (or p modes).

On the Composition of the Solar Interior
1998Standard solar models, although they are free from the influence of much of the fluid motion that is bound to be present in the Sun, have been shown by helioseismology to represent the spherically averaged structure of the Sun amazingly well. This state of affairs has come about after painstaking refinements by a great many people of the pertinent ...

The equations of stellar structure and evolution need to be solved to model the interior of the Sun. Modelling the Sun is, however, slightly more complicated than modelling other stars since we have more observational constraints for the Sun than for other stars. In this article we discuss the basics of modelling the interior structure of the Sun.

Problems of the Solar Interior
1987The sun provides a testing ground for theories of stellar structure and evolution, the substantial increase in information afforded by observations on solar oscillations and the measurement of the solar neutrino flux suggests that we may not as yet have a full understanding of stellar interiors.

Solar interior structure and luminosity variations
Solar Physics, 1981The assumptions of standard solar evolution theory are mentioned briefly, and the principle conclusions drawn from them are described. The result is a rationalization of the present luminosity and radius of the Sun. Because there is some uncertainty about the interior composition of the Sun, a range of models is apparently acceptable.

Helioseismologyis probing the internal structure and dynamics of the Sun with high precision. Frequencies of nearlyhalf a million resonant modes of oscillations have been measured bythe ground based Global Oscillation Network Group project and the space based Michelson Doppler Imager.

Solar oscillations and the physics of the solar interior
2008The variety and precision of the observed frequencies of solar oscillations allow a detailed investigation of the foundations of computations of stellar models. This is of obvious importance to our understanding of the structure of other stars of moderate mass.

Serious research on the solar internal structure began in the second half of nineteenth century. Attempts were made to asses physical parameters in the interior and, first of all, to explain the source of the energy radiated by the Sun. Already sir Arthur Eddington in his The internal constitution of the stars published in 1926 presents the hypothesis ...
