Turbulent convection as a significant hidden provider of magnetic helicity in solar eruptions [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
Solar flares and coronal mass ejections, the primary space weather disturbances affecting the entire heliosphere and near-Earth environment, mainly emanate from sunspot regions harbouring high degrees of magnetic twist.

Flux emergence, flux imbalance, magnetic free energy and solar flares [PDF]

open access: yesAdvances in Space Research, 2013
Abstract Emergence of complex magnetic flux in the solar active regions lead to several observational effects such as a change in sunspot area and flux embalance in photospheric magnetograms. The flux emergence also results in twisted magnetic field lines that add to free energy content.

Magnetic Flux Emergence Along the Solar Cycle

open access: yesSpace Science Reviews, 2014
Flux emergence plays an important role along the solar cycle. Magnetic flux emergence builds sunspot groups and solar activity. The sunspot groups contribute to the large scale behaviour of the magnetic field over the 11 year cycle and the reversal of the North and South magnetic polarity every 22 years.

Magnetic flux emergence into the solar photosphere and chromosphere [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy and Astrophysics, 2009
Aims. We model the emergence of magnetized plasma across granular convection cells and the low atmosphere, including layers up to the mid-chromosphere. Methods. Three-dimensional numerical experiments are carried out in which the equations of MHD and radiative transfer are solved self-consistently.

Flux Emergence (Theory)

open access: yesLiving Reviews in Solar Physics, 2014
Magnetic flux emergence from the solar convection zone into the overlying atmosphere is the driver of a diverse range of phenomena associated with solar activity.

The emergence of magnetic flux and its role on the onset of solar dynamic events [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophical Transactions Series A, Mathematical, Physical, and Engineering Sciences, 2019
A plethora of solar dynamic events, such as the formation of active regions, the emission of jets and the occurrence of eruptions is often associated with the emergence of magnetic flux from the interior of the Sun to the surface and above. Here, we present a short review on the onset, driving and/or triggering of such events by magnetic flux emergence.

Magnetic Flux Emergence and Solar Eruptions in Partially Ionized Plasmas

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We have performed 3D MHD simulations to study the effect of partial ionization in the process of magnetic flux emergence in the Sun. In fact, we continue previous work, and we now focus (1) on the emergence of the magnetic fields above the solar ...

Acceleration of the fast solar wind by the emergence of new magnetic flux [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research, 1999
Recent observations have shown that small magnetic loops are continuously emerging within supergranules in the solar photosphere. The subsequent reconnection of this emerging flux with field lines which open into the corona should define the Poynting's vector and mass flux into the corona.

Small-Scale Magnetic-Flux Emergence Observed with Hinode Solar Optical Telescope [PDF]

open access: yesPublication of the Astronomical Society of Japan, 2007
We observed small-scale magnetic-flux emergence in a sunspot moat region by the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) aboard the Hinode satellite. We analyzed filtergram images observed at wavelengths of Fe 6302 Å, G band, and Ca II H. In Stokes$I$ images of Fe 6302 Å, emerging magnetic flux was recognized as dark lanes.
