A superposed epoch analysis of auroral evolution during substorm growth, onset and recovery: open magnetic flux control of substorm intensity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We perform two superposed epoch analyses of the auroral evolution during substorms using the FUV instrument on the Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Explorer ( IMAGE) spacecraft. The larger of the two studies includes nearly 2000 substorms.

Passing Stars as an Important Driver of Paleoclimate and the Solar System’s Orbital Evolution

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
Reconstructions of the paleoclimate indicate that ancient climatic fluctuations on Earth are often correlated with variations in its orbital elements. However, the chaos inherent in the solar system’s orbital evolution prevents numerical simulations from

Stepwise On‐Surface Synthesis and Transformations of Two‐Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks by Controlled Thermal Stimuli

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The seminal transformation of a 2D‐COF (SURFCOF‐IMDEA1) into a 2D porous COF (SURFCOF‐IMDEA2) on Au(111) by a sequential C‐C coupling and ladderization triggered by thermal annealing steps at increasing temperatures is reported. Abstract The development of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is currently a primary objective in materials science, taking ...

Solar system tests for realistic f(T) models with non-minimal torsion–matter coupling

open access: yesEuropean Physical Journal C: Particles and Fields, 2017
In the previous paper, we have constructed two f(T) models with non-minimal torsion–matter coupling extension, which are successful in describing the evolution history of the Universe including the radiation-dominated era, the matter-dominated era, and ...

Planet formation and the evolution of the Solar System [PDF]

open access: yesPhysica Scripta, 2019
Abstract The Capture Theory gives planet formation through a tidal interaction between a condensed star and a protostar within a dense embedded stellar cluster. Initial extensive and highly eccentric planetary orbits decay and usually round-off in circumstellar material captured from the protostar.

A Functional 2D Carbon Allotrope Combining Nanoporous Graphene and Biphenylene Segments

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The synthesis of a novel nanoporous graphene (NPG) is reported with biphenylene segments via thermal fusion of 12‐armchair porous graphene nanoribbons grown on gold surfaces. Characterization using STM, AFM, and DFT reveals low‐defect semiconducting behaviour and tunable band gaps.

Mission and system design of a 3U CubeSat for passive GTO to LEO transfer

open access: yes, 2012
This paper denotes a mission concept and system design for a 3U CubeSat technology demonstration. The spacecraft carries an inflatable, ejectable balloon that is used to engineer its area-to-mass-ratio.

Recurrence quantification analysis of two solar cycle indices

open access: yesJournal of Space Weather and Space Climate, 2017
Solar activity affects the whole heliosphere and near-Earth space environment. It has been reported in the literature that the mechanism responsible for the solar activity modulation behaves like a low-dimensional chaotic system.

Opportunities of Semiconducting Oxide Nanostructures as Advanced Luminescent Materials in Photonics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The review discusses the challenges of wide and ultrawide bandgap semiconducting oxides as a suitable material platform for photonics. They offer great versatility in terms of tuning microstructure, native defects, doping, anisotropy, and micro‐ and nano‐structuring. The review focuses on their light emission, light‐confinement in optical cavities, and

Laboratory Studies of Hypervelocity Impacts on Solar System Analogues [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Impact cratering and asteroid collisions are major processes throughout the Solar System. Although previous collision-related impact investigations exist (Flynn et al. 2015, Holsapple et al. 2002 and Burchell et al.
