Projected Warming of the Southern Ocean Disrupts Embryonic Development and Hatch Timing in Antarctic Fish

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology Communications, EarlyView.
Embryos are particularly sensitive to thermal challenge. Antarctic fish embryos raised at projected Southern Ocean temperatures hatch during the winter, have a high incidence of morphological abnormalities, have shorter body lengths, and express genes indicative of cellular stress.

Novel Fluorite‐Structured Materials for Solid‐State Refrigeration

Small, 2022
AbstractRefrigeration based on the electrocaloric effect can offer many advantages over conventional cooling technologies in terms of efficiency, size, weight, and power source. The discovery of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric properties in fluorite‐based materials in 2011 has led to diverse applications related to memory (e.g., ferroelectric ...

Solid state magnetic refrigerator

Applied Energy, 2012
Abstract The viability and operation of a fully solid state magnetic refrigeration system with envisaged applications on chip, sensor and device cooling is here tested using numerical simulations. The proposed system relies on the combined use of materials displaying the magnetocaloric effect and of materials whose thermal conductivities are ...

A solid state Pomeranchuk refrigerator

Cryogenics, 2005
Abstract Recently we have shown that YbInCu 4 and related compounds present a solid state Pomeranchuk effect. At their first order volume transition, a local moment phase coexist with a renormalized Fermi liquid in analogy with 3 He at its melting curve. This structural transition can be affected by pressure and magnetic field. We show here that as
