On the phase behavior of hard aspherical particles
We use numerical simulations to understand how random deviations from the ideal spherical shape affect the ability of hard particles to form fcc crystalline structures.

We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Collisions of solid ice in planetesimal formation
We present collision experiments of centimetre projectiles on to decimetre targets, both made up of solid ice, at velocities of $15\,\mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}$ to $45\,\mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}$ at an average temperature of $\mathrm{T_{avg}}=255.8\pm0.7\,\mathrm{K ...

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Research status of rare-earth-ion-doped infrared laser
Infrared lasers have an extensive range of applications in sensing, detection, communication, medicine, and other fields. The principle of directly pumping solid-state lasers is simple, and it can easily achieve high-power and high-efficiency laser ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

An insight into polarization states of solid-state organic lasers
The polarization states of lasers are crucial issues both for practical applications and fundamental research. In general, they depend in a combined manner on the properties of the gain material and on the structure of the electromagnetic modes.

Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.
