A Lactation Measure of Somatic Cell Count

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 1987
Adjustments and weights to combine individual sample day SCC into a lactation measure were developed from 182,446 Holstein lactation records completed in 1984 from herds primarily in the western United States. Data included 1,660,782 sample day SCC expressed as log base 2 scores.

Relationship of herd average somatic cell count and spontaneous recovery from subclinical mastitis [PDF]

open access: yes, 1985
The rate of spontaneous recovery from subclinical mastitis was evaluated in 56 Kansas. DHI herds participating in the Somatic Cell Count (SCC) program. Herds were classified as low (>300,000) or high (>600,000) based on herd sec average.

EVALUATION OF METHODS OF ANALYSIS TO DETERMINE THE SOMATIC CELL COUNT IN RAW MILK, KEPT IN THE COOLING TANK

open access: yesRevista do Instituto de Latícinios Cândido Tostes, 2014
We analyzed the quality of raw milk from eight dairy property in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, stored in a cooling tank, in order to evaluate methods for determining somatic cell counts (SCC).

Interrelationships of Somatic Cell Count, Mastitis, and Milk Yield in a Low Somatic Cell Count Herd

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 1993
In a high yielding low SCC herd, changes in milk yield associated with SCC and occurrence of clinical mastitis and differences in SCC with parity, clinical mastitis, and DIM were investigated. Milk yield data were obtained at every milking, and SCC was measured once every 48 h in 117 cows during the first 119 d postpartum.

Integration of Differential and Total Somatic Cell Counts for Udder Health Classification: Association with Milk Lactose Concentration

open access: yesCluj Veterinary Journal
Mastitis is one of the most important diseases in dairy cattle, impairing milk yield, composition, and animal welfare. Somatic cell count (SCC) is the traditional indicator of udder health, but it does not provide information on leukocyte composition ...

Somatic Cell Reference Samples for Calibration of Milk Somatic Cell Counting Methods

open access: yesJournal of Food Protection, 1984
Somatic cell count samples (SCCS) for use in calibration of milk somatic cell counting methods were prepared from raw bulk milk preserved with potassium dichromate. Somatic cells were separated by centrifugation, then appropriate cell dilutions were prepared in the dichromate-preserved skim milk.

Pilot study into milk haptoglobin as an indicator of udder health in heifers after calving [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Mastitis, inflammation of the mammary gland, is often caused by intramammary infection with bacterial organisms. It impacts on dairy cattle welfare, production, udder health and longevity in the herd.

Population Dynamics of Bulk Milk Somatic Cell Counts

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 1990
The population dynamics for bulk milk SCC in 27,000 Dutch dairy farms was studied over 6 yr; SCC declined markedly in 1984 and 1985. This coincided with the introduction of the quota system in the European Community. The CV of SCC was .36, ranging from .15 to .89.
