Estimation of Genetic Parameters for Somatic Cell Score in Holsteins

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 1992
Genetic parameters of somatic cell scores for Holstein cows were estimated using an animal model and REML for two data sets. Set 1, with 13,017 records from 5278 cows, was used to obtain variance components, heritability, and repeatability for two lactation measures: the simple average and the weighted average of test day data.

Herd Composite Somatic Cell Counts: Average Linear Score and Weighted Average Somatic Cell Count Score and Milk Production

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 1988
The relationship between herd production weighted average somatic cell count (average of somatic cell count weighted by individual cow milk production) and average linear score (average of individual cow linear score somatic cell counts) was investigated using three models.

EVALUATION OF METHODS OF ANALYSIS TO DETERMINE THE SOMATIC CELL COUNT IN RAW MILK, KEPT IN THE COOLING TANK

open access: yesRevista do Instituto de Latícinios Cândido Tostes, 2014
We analyzed the quality of raw milk from eight dairy property in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, stored in a cooling tank, in order to evaluate methods for determining somatic cell counts (SCC).

Genotype by Environment Interaction for Yield and Somatic Cell Score with Alternative Environmental Definitions [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 2003
Differential genetic expression in high and low opportunity Sicilian Holstein-Friesian and Brown Swiss herd environments was investigated using endogenous and exogenous variables in a set of three definitions. Results of genetic by environmental interaction were compared using alternative environmental definitions: within herd-year standard deviation ...

The relationship of excessive energy deficit with milk somatic cell score and clinical mastitis [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 2021
Periparturient cows go through a period of immune suppression often marked by immune cell dysfunction. Further exacerbation of this dysfunction through early-lactation excessive energy deficit (EED) has been associated with increased susceptibility to infectious conditions such as mastitis.

Bayesian Segregation Analysis of Somatic Cell Scores of Ontario Holstein Cattle

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 2001
Bayesian segregation analysis using a Gibbs sampling approach was applied to four sets of simulated data and one set of field data to detect evidence of major genes affecting the evaluated trait. The substitution effect of a major gene and its allelic frequency were estimated for each set of data.

Estimation of Genetic Parameters for Test Day Records of Somatic Cell Score

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 1995
The present study estimated variance components for test day records of somatic cell score and production traits. Data consisted of 235,100 test day observations recorded between 1986 and 1994 on lactations 1 to 3 of 15,922 Holstein cows from 143 herds.

Selection on Somatic Cell Score to Improve Resistance to Mastitis in the United States

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 1994
Increased genetic susceptibility to mastitis has accompanied the rapid genetic increase in milk yield, and genetic selection for mastitis resistance should be considered. Somatic cell score is recommended as an indicator trait to achieve genetic improvement for mastitis resistance.

Impact of udder health on economics of dairy goat [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Central European Agriculture, 2018
The impact of udder health on the economics of dairy farms of White Shorthaired goat was investigated using the program ECOWEIGHT. Impact on the farm economics (profit in €/goat/year and profitability in %) was analysed indirectly thought variation in ...

Using Somatic Cell Score Evaluations for Management Decisions

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 1994
Genetic evaluations for mean somatic cell scores for lactation enable producers to reduce increases in SCC that accompany genetic improvement for milk yield. Current progeny test designs will produce lower reliabilities for somatic cell score evaluations than for milk yield because of lower heritability.
