Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

A Genome-wide Association Study for Somatic Cell Score Using the Illumina High-Density Bovine BeadChip Identifies Several Novel QTL Potentially Related to Mastitis Susceptibility

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2013
Mastitis is an inflammation-driven disease of the bovine mammary gland that occurs in response to physical damage or infection and is one of the most costly production-related diseases in the dairy industry worldwide.

Association Between Recycled Manure Solids Bedding and Subclinical Mastitis Incidence: A Canadian Cohort Study

open access: yesFrontiers in Veterinary Science, 2022
Recycled manure solids (RMS) are increasingly used as bedding for dairy cows. However, potential impact of RMS bedding on animal health is not well described.

Estimation of Heritability for Somatic Cell Score of Holstein Cows in Hokkaido

open access: yesNihon Chikusan Gakkaiho, 2006

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Effects of herd management practices on somatic cell counts in an arid climate

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Zootecnia, 2014
The objective of this study was to evaluate associations between average lactation somatic cell counts (SCC) and herd management practices in an arid climate.

Genomic patterns of homozygosity and inbreeding depression in Murciano-Granadina goats

open access: yesJournal of Animal Science and Biotechnology, 2022
Background Inbreeding depression can adversely affect traits related to fitness, reproduction and productive performance. Although current research suggests that inbreeding levels are generally low in most goat breeds, the impact of inbreeding depression

Association between differential somatic cell count and California Mastitis Test results in Holstein cattle

open access: yesJDS Communications, 2022
The California Mastitis Test (CMT) has been used to estimate total somatic cell count (SCC) levels in milk; however, milk with similar SCC levels occasionally shows inconsistent CMT results, which limits the use of the CMT. This observational study aimed

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Genetic Evaluation of Somatic Cell Scores for United States Dairy Cattle

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 1994
Increases in milk yield from genetic selection may be accompanied by correlated increases in genetic susceptibility to clinical mastitis and somatic cells. Unlike clinical mastitis, somatic cell scores can be easily determined and recorded and are related to milk loss from subclinical mastitis. Selection against high somatic cell scores should decrease
