Plasticity of Somatosensory Cortex in Primates

Seminars in Neuroscience, 1997
Abstract Over recent years, we have come to the surprising realization that sensory cortex is highly plastic in functional organization, even in adult brains. Much of the evidence for this conclusion comes from studies of the effects of peripheral deafferentation or sensory experience on the somatotopy of primary somatosensory cortex (area 3b) of ...

The functional organization of somatosensory cortex in primates

Annals of Anatomy - Anatomischer Anzeiger, 1993
Our understanding of the functional organization of somatosensory cortex and thalamus in primates and other mammals has greatly increased over the last few years. It is now clear that higher primates have four strip-like representations of skin and muscle receptors corresponding to areas 3 a, 3b, 1 and 2 of anterior parietal cortex.

Anatomical Organization of the Somatosensory Cortex

1973
This chapter is primarily a review of experimental anatomical work carried out in the last five years with both light and electron microscopy. Throughout this account an attempt has been made to link these observations with known physiological properties and where a physiological correlation is wanting, to suggest possible directions for further study.

Functional Organization of the Somatosensory Cortex

1973
The large segment of the attempts to gain an appreciation for the functional organization of the somatosensory cortex is based on the study of responses expressed as electrical activity, and engendered under specific, operationally defined stimulus conditions.

Somatotopy of Human Somatosensory Cortex

1993
We studied 4 epilepsy patients during presurgical evaluation. All patients had partial seizures defined by EEG recordings and behavior during seizures. The seizures were medically intractable, and the patients were evaluated with chronically indwelling subdural grids for definitive localization of the seizure focus.
