Sonar Systems and the Sonar Equation
2019The purpose of this chapter is to introduce several basic concepts related to sonar systems and their analysis through the sonar equation. The components of a sonar system are described, including monostatic, bistatic, and distributed systems. Examples of how they can be used to localize objects of interest are presented for active and passive systems.

Research of new concept sonar-cognitive sonar
Journal of Marine Science and Application, 2011The performance of a sonar system is closely related to the marine environment and the target characteristics. When dealing with the echoes of a traditional active sonar system, the sonar designers often do not take into account the influence of the environmental information and prior knowledge perceived by sonar receivers, making it difficult to ...

Sonar was invented by copying bats' and dolphins' echolocation systems, but the dominant approaches taken to sonar systems today tend to focus on imagery and resolution. In this paper we explore a bio-inspired approach to sonar and sonar signal processing. Conventional sonars use narrowband pulses.

Develops theoretical and practical techniques to recover the pose of planar surfaces with minimal sensor readings and motion. A proof is given that two sonar readings suffice to precisely locate a single planar surface that returns the sonar's signal.

Sonar—The story of an experiment
Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology, 1974THERE are two main reasons for choosing a title such as this. Firstly it is necessary to put on record how this lengthy experiment came about. A combination of accident, coincidence and any amount of good luck seems to have driven us inexorably onwards.

Sonar examination of the abdomen
Ultrasonics, 1966Abstract The author has a long clinical experience of ultrasound. In this article he describes his techniques of diagnosis of pregnancy and measurement of the foetal head and his recent work on tumours, in which he has developed a way of distinguishing the malignant tumour from the ...

This paper describes the major trends in sonar signal processing and gives some example of advanced algorithms to illustrate the need in computation power: adaptive beamforming for passive sonars, wideband Doppler code for active sonar in coastal/shallow water environment (reverberation limiting conditions) and synthetic aperture processing for ...
