Counting Fish in Sonar Images

2018 25th IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), 2018
The goal of this paper is to estimate the population of fishes in sonar images. Compared to natural images, sonar images present substantially different visual characteristics. Fishes in sonar images exhibit unreliable appearance cues, expose under imaging noise, vary significantly in shape and size.

Denoising and inpainting SONAR images

2015 38th International Conference on Telecommunications and Signal Processing (TSP), 2015
The basic principle of SONAR is to use sound to detect or locate objects, typically in the ocean. During acquisition, some pixels of SONAR images could be lost. The recovery of lost or damaged data can be done by using an inpainting algorithm. But, SONAR images are perturbed by speckle noise, so speckle reduction filters should be used to improve the ...

DISO: Direct Imaging Sonar Odometry [PDF]

open access: yes2024 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA)
This paper introduces a novel sonar odometry system that estimates the relative spatial transformation between two sonar image frames. Considering the unique challenges, such as low resolution and high noise, of sonar imagery for odometry and ...

Synthetic aperture active sonar imaging

[Proceedings] ICASSP-92: 1992 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 1992
The main problems involved in synthetic aperture sonar imaging are medium instability, slow mapping rate, and platform motion. Proposed solutions to these problems are reviewed, and a new technique for synthetic aperture sonar imaging is presented which allows a fast mapping rate and improved motion compensation.

Unsupervised Markovian segmentation of sonar images

1997 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 2002
This work deals with unsupervised sonar image segmentation. We present a new estimation segmentation procedure using the an iterative method called iterative conditional estimation (ICE). This method takes into account the variety of the laws in the distribution mixture of a sonar image and the estimation of the parameters of the label field (modeled ...
