How important are quantum mechanical effects in controlling biological functions: Enzymes, electron transfer and bird navigation

open access: yesProtein Science, Volume 35, Issue 7, July 2026.
Abstract In light of the centennial of the Schrödinger equation, this article addresses the popular idea that quantum mechanical effects play an important role in biological systems. We start by defining what is qualified as a quantum effect. We then clarify the idea that quantum mechanical tunneling is a crucial factor in enzyme catalysis.

Anthropogenic Nest Cavities Used by Snow Buntings in an Urban Arctic Landscape

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Northern and Arctic ecosystems are experiencing rapid climate change, and simultaneously, human populations in the North are growing and centralizing. The Snow Bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis) is a Holarctic‐breeding songbird and abundant in urban Iqaluit

11β-HSD Types 1 and 2 in the Songbird Brain

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology, 2018
Glucocorticoid (GC) hormones act on the brain to regulate diverse functions, from behavior and homeostasis to the activity of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis.

The Effect of Heterospecific Song and Anthropogenic Sound on the Development of Life History Traits in a Field Cricket

open access: yesEthology, Volume 132, Issue 7, Page 466-476, July 2026.
We raised fall field crickets in acoustic environments of silence, their own song, traffic noise, or the song of the recently introduced Japanese burrowing cricket and measured development, size, and adult survival. We found that crickets reared with burrowing cricket song developed more quickly than crickets reared in silence.

Cross-scale habitat selection reveals within-stand structural requirements for fledgling Golden-winged Warblers

open access: yesAvian Conservation and Ecology, 2021
The post-fledging period remains one of the most understudied portions of the avian lifecycle despite the fact that fledglings require resources distinct from those used during nesting.

Oculomotor learning revisited: a model of reinforcement learning in the basal ganglia incorporating an efference copy of motor actions

open access: yesFrontiers in Neural Circuits, 2012
In its simplest formulation, reinforcement learning is based on the idea that if an action taken in a particular context is followed by a favorable outcome, then, in the same context, the tendency to produce that action should be strengthened, or ...

Beyond mammals: the evolution of chewing and other forms of oropharyngeal food processing in vertebrates

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 3, Page 1406-1462, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Oropharyngeal food processing exhibits a remarkable diversity among vertebrates, reflecting the evolution of specialised ‘processing centres’ associated with the mandibular, hyoid, and branchial arches. Although studies have detailed various food‐processing strategies and mechanisms across vertebrates, a coherent and comprehensive terminology ...
