Diffuse-light two-dimensional line-of-sight attenuation for soot concentration measurements

A technique of diffuse-light two-dimensional line-of-sight attenuation (diffuse 2D-LOSA) is described and demonstrated that achieves very high levels of sensitivity in transmissivity measurements (optical thicknesses down to 0.001) while effectively mitigating interferences due to beam steering.

Concentration and Temperature Effects on Soot Formation in Diffusion Flames

The effects of fuel dilution on soot formation in laminar diffusion flames is investigated. The lower soot formation rate observed is due to a combination of concentration, temperature and residence time effects. Based on local measurements of the temperature, temperature seems to be the most important effect.

Pcdd/F-concentrations in chimney soot from house heating systems

Abstract 50 different chimney soot samples from house heating in the area of Bayreuth, Germany, were analyzed for PCDD/F. The furnaces operated with wood, coal, wood/coal or oil. PCDD/F were detected in all samples and their isomer patterns were similar to those from municipal waste incinerators.

A novel approach to measure both the particle and the NO2 concentration in the exhaust of diesel engines during the roadworthiness test in the periodical technical inspection is presented. It is based on a multi-wavelength extinction measurement and a mathematical inversion algorithm to obtain the concentrations from the extinction readings.
