A picture of soot particle inception
Symposium (International) on Combustion, 1989We have shown in earlier work that the ultimate soot loading in a sooting premixed flame is determined largely by processes that occur before the growth region, even though 90% of the soot mass is contributed by C2H2 surface growth. In this work we make the first measurements of how early soot formation kinetics vary with equivalence ratio.

Extinction efficiencies of elongated soot particles
Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer, 1989Abstract Knowledge of the radiative properties of soot particles is needed in many areas of research and practical applications. Soot particles play a significant role in radiative heat-transfer modeling, efficiency of mobile and stationary combustion systems and air pollution studies.

Soot particle measurements in diffusion flames
Combustion and Flame, 1983Abstract The formation and growth of soot particles in a coannular diffusion flame have been studied using a laser extinction/scattering technique for particle size measurement. Measurements have been obtained with ethene as the fuel for various fuel flow rates. The results reveal that the flame can be broadly divided into two regions.

Equilibrium nanostructure of primary soot particles
Proceedings of the Combustion Institute, 2000This paper addresses the origin of the characteristic shell/core nanostructure of primary soot particles, in which a zone of concentrically oriented graphene layers surrounds a disordered core. In situ microscopy is used to examine the liquid crystalline optical textures on the external surfaces of droplets and pools of molten mesophase pitch, taken as

Pre-Particle Chemistry in Soot Formation
1981Species and reactions involved in the early stages of soot formation prior to the formation of particles have been studied in flat low pressure flames of benzene using a molecular beam mass spectrometer system. In a near-sooting (equivalence ratio φ = 1.8) benzene-oxygen-argon flame, the profiles of molar flux versus distance from the burner for ...

Carbonization Rate of Soot Precursor Particles
Combustion Science and Technology, 1996Abstract The presence of soot precursor particles in hydrocarbon diffusion flames is made clearly evident by means of contemporary sampling techniques in combination with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). These particles are the immediate predecessors of mature, partially dehydrogenated carbonaceous soot aggregates, and recent analytical tests ...

Measurement of Naphthalene Uptake by Combustion Soot Particles
Environmental Science & Technology, 2013In this study, we designed and constructed an experimental laboratory apparatus to measure the uptake of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by soot particles. Results for the uptake of naphthalene (C10H8) by soot particles typical of those found in the exhaust of an aircraft engine are reported in this paper.

Controlling Fractal Diffusion of Differently-Sized Soot Particles
International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, 2018Fractal diffusion of soot particles is widespread in nature. We propose a mathematical model of interference control for diffusion systems of differently-sized soot particles that can be used to predict and control fractal diffusion. The effect of the source of the interference on diffusion is investigated by analyzing the numerical relationship ...
