Molecular Cloning of SIV From Sooty Mangabey Monkeys

Journal of Medical Primatology, 1989
We derived two infectious molecular clones of SIV from sooty mangabey monkeys (Cercocebus atys) and compared them by restriction enzyme mapping and limited DNA sequencing to other known primate lentiviruses. These analyses show that SIVsmm is closely related to, but distinct from, SIVmac and HIV‐2.

Sooty mangabey (Cercocebus torquatus atys) IGHG and IGHA genes

Immunogenetics, 2006
Antibodies are adaptor molecules of the immune system that link antigen recognition with the effector mechanisms responsible for antigen clearance. Several nonhuman primate species are widely used in biomedical research, especially for vaccine development and for AIDS-related studies. However, nonhuman primate antibody molecules have been characterized

The role of the armadillo and sooty mangabey monkey in human leprosy

International Journal of Dermatology, 2008
AbstractBackground  The armadillo was the first animal model of leprosy. Its role in the transmission of leprosy remains controversial. The sooty mangabey model of leprosy led to the discovery that rhesus monkeys were more susceptible to leprosy when coinfected with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), but that leprosy may play a protective role ...

Paternity in Sooty Mangabeys

International Journal of Primatology, 1998
We determined paternity for 78 sooty mangabeys [(Cercocebus torquatus atys (Groves, 1978) equivalent to C. atys (Napier and Napier, 1967)], born between 1986 and 1993, using DNA profile analysis. The analysis is based on two independent assays of the genome of each individual via multilocus DNA probes.

Conflict resolution in sooty mangabeys

Animal Behaviour, 1993
Abstract Abstract. Behaviour associated with conflict and conflict resolution (i.e. aggression, aid to the victim, join with aggressor, reconciliation) and the individuals involved (kin versus non-kin) provide an important means by which to compare the social systems of different primate species.

Serological evidence of alpha herpesvirus infection in sooty mangabeys

Journal of Medical Primatology, 2002
Contact between sooty mangabeys (SMs) and a pigtailed macaque prompted the serological screening of SMs for evidence of infection with B virus. Serological tests detected SM antibodies that reacted with B virus polypeptides. Additional testing was performed with sera from SMs with no previous contact with macaques.

Seed choice differs by sex in sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys)

Primates, 2020
The sooty mangabey (Cercocebus atys) practices year-round durophagy. A large part of the C. atys diet consists of the oily nut of Sacoglottis gabonensis, which is accessed by post-canine crushing of the hard, protective seed coat. During a typical foraging bout, some seeds are discarded after initial crushing attempts using isometric biting, but the ...

Activity Patterns in a Sooty Mangabey Group

Folia Primatologica, 1976
Diurnal, temperature and weather influences on the activity profiles of a sooty mangabey group were compared to similar data previously reported for geladas and pigtail monkeys. Distinct behavioral profiles for each group were obtained despite the near identity of living conditions. Mangabey patterns in captivity appeared very similar to those reported
