Reproductive parameters in the sooty mangabey (Cercocebus torquatus atys)

American Journal of Primatology, 1990
AbstractData obtained over a 7.5 year period from a captive group of sooty mangabeys were analyzed to examine the relationship between demographic variables and reproductive events. Perineal swelling and reproductive data collected from 67 females contributed to the analyses. Sexual maturation, as marked by the onset of swelling cycles, was recorded at

Social learning in wild sooty mangabey vocal communication

2023
Elucidating the origin of language is considered one of the hardest problems in science. There is considerable support for the idea that the basic components of human cognition, including the language faculty, did not emerge de novo, but have deep roots in the primate lineage. Although much is known about how humans acquire language, and even how birds

Affiliative behavior of adult female sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys)

American Journal of Primatology, 1988
AbstractA 14‐month study of 30 adult female members of a captive group of sooty mangabeys investigated their affiliative interactions with group members of varying age and sex. The adult females preferentially affiliated with other adults and interacted less than expected with immature group members.

HIV-2: The Sooty Mangabey Connection

1997
Abstract In September of 1984, the year that HIV-1 was unmistakably identified as the prime cause of AIDS, a similar virus was isolated from Asian monkeys by Ron Desrosiers at Harvard’s New England Primate Center in Massachusetts. These research animals had an AIDS-like disease, as did Asian monkeys at several other US primate facilities.

A Study of Facial Growth in the Sooty Mangabey Cercocebus atys

Folia Primatologica, 1991
This study examines the pattern of facial bone growth remodelling in the sooty mangabey (Cercocebus atys) by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of high-accuracy replicas. The efficacy of the technique is appraised by SEM interpretations of facial remodelling in the crab-eating macaque (Macaca fascicularis) and correlative histological examination.

Grooming with a stone in sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys)

American Journal of Primatology, 1988
Abstract“Stone‐grooming,” or grooming with a stone, has been reported in Macaca fuscata. This report provides a descriptive account of a similar behavior displayed by a female mangabey Cercocebus atys. During a study of embracing behavior in sooty mangabeys, one adult female was observed to groom her infant with a stone.

Infant access and handling in sooty mangabeys and vervet monkeys

Animal Behaviour, 2011
Access to one’s newborn infant is a commodity that can be traded for other benefits such as grooming in nonhuman primates. According to the biological market paradigm, the price paid should fluctuate with the number of newborns in the group. We investigated the grooming sessions between mothers with infants less than 3 months old and other adult ...

Ruptured mycotic aortic aneurysm in a sooty mangabey (Cercocebus atys).

Comparative medicine, 2012
Mycotic aortic aneurysm is a local, irreversible dilatation of the aorta associated with destruction of the vessel wall by infection and is a grave clinical condition associated with high morbidity and mortality in humans. Rupture of aortic aneurysms can be spontaneous, idiopathic, or due to severe trauma, and the condition has been associated with ...

Spontaneous gastric carcinomas in sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys).

Comparative medicine, 2012
Sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys) are native to West Africa and are a natural host of SIV, which is implicated in the origin of HIV2. They have been used in studies of AIDS pathogenesis, leprosy, immune responses, reproductive biology, and behavior. Spontaneous tumors have rarely been reported in this species.

Moving up the dominance hierarchy in young sooty mangabeys

Animal Behaviour, 1995
Abstract In contrast to the matrilineal dominance system reported for several primate species, sooty mangabeys,Cercocebus torquatus atys, exhibit a dominance system that is independent of matriline except in the first years of life. Beginning as early as 2-3 years of age, juveniles may begin to outrank both their mothers and other initially higher ...
