Tooth chipping patterns and dental caries suggest a soft fruit diet in early anthropoids

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Biological Anthropology, Volume 183, Issue 2, February 2024.
Tooth fractures in early primates. Abstract Objectives Fossils from the Fayum Depression, Egypt, are crucial for understanding anthropoid evolution due to the abundance of taxa and the time interval they represent (late Eocene to early Oligocene). Dietary and foraging behavioral interpretations suggest fruits were their dominant food source, although ...

Genetic diversity in the env V1-V2 region of proviral quasispecies from long-term controller MHC-typed cynomolgus macaques infected with SHIVSF162P4cy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Intra-host evolution of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) has been shown by viral RNA analysis in subjects who naturally suppress plasma viremia to low levels, known as controllers.

Intact Type I Interferon Production and IRF7 Function in Sooty Mangabeys

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2013
In contrast to pathogenic HIV/SIV infections of humans and rhesus macaques (RMs), natural SIV infection of sooty mangabeys (SMs) is typically non-pathogenic despite high viremia. Several studies suggested that low immune activation and relative resistance of CD4+ central memory T-cells from virus infection are mechanisms that protect SMs from AIDS.

Distinct Patterns of Ccr5 Versus Alternative Coreceptor Dependence in Non-Natural Host Versus Natural Host Simmian Immunodeficiency Virus Infection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Natural host sooty mangabeys infected with simian immunodeficiency viruses (SIV) exhibit high plasma viral loads without widespread CD4+ T cell loss.

Understanding the process of envelope glycoprotein incorporation into virions in simian and feline immunodeficiency viruses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The lentiviral envelope glycoproteins (Env) mediate virus entry by interacting with specific receptors present at the cell surface, thereby determining viral tropism and pathogenesis.

Genomics meets HIV-1 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Genomics is now a core element in the effort to develop a vaccine against HIV-1. Thanks to unprecedented progress in high-throughput genotyping and sequencing, in knowledge about genetic variation in humans, and in evolutionary genomics, it is finally ...

Private_Development of Alarm Call Behaviour in Sooty Mangabeys (published as Comprehension of own and other species’ alarm calls in sooty mangabey vocal development)

open access: yes, 2022
Primates understand the meaning of alarm calls of their own and other species, but not much is known about how they acquire such knowledge. Rapid acquisition may be particularly important for younger individuals that incur higher predation risks and lack experience in dealing with predators.

Worldwide Prevalence of Lentivirus Infection in Wild Feline Species: Epidemiologic and Phylogenetic Aspects [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
The natural occurrence of lentiviruses closely related to feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) in nondomestic felid species is shown here to be worldwide.
