Resilient Understanding: The Value of Seeing for Oneself [PDF]

open access: yes
The primary aim of this paper is to argue that the value of understanding derives in part from a kind of subjective stability of belief that we call epistemic resilience. We think that this feature of understanding has been overlooked by recent work, and

Demonstration of an All‐Optical AND Gate Mediated by Photochromic Molecules

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A logic AND gate that runs on photons is demonstrated. It relies on two spatially separated photochromic molecules that work in tandem. Abstract The realization of a photonic logic AND gate, i.e. a logic AND gate that runs on photons rather than electrons, and where all steps are controlled by light, is demonstrated. In a proof‐of‐principle experiment,

More than a Reductio: Plato’s Method in the Parmenides and Lysis

open access: yesÉtudes Platoniciennes, 2019
Plato’s Parmenides and Lysis have a surprising amount in common from a methodological standpoint. Both systematically employ a method that I call ‘exploring both sides’, a philosophical method for encouraging further inquiry and comprehensively ...

In Pursuit of True Wisdom: How the Re-Emergence of Classical Wonder Should Replace Descartes’s Neo-Averrostic Sophistry

open access: yesStudia Gilsoniana, 2020
Modern mathematical physics often claims to make philosophy obsolete. This presentation aims to show that the modern concept of wisdom fundamentally diverges with the thinking of Descartes, that, strictly speaking, at least in his metaphysical first ...

Double Helical Plasmonic Antennas

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Plasmonic double helical antennas funnel circularly polarized light to the nanoscale, offering strong chiroptical interaction and directional light emission. Extending a single helix design tool, this study combines numerical modeling with experimental validation, revealing large, broadband dissymmetry factors in the visible range.

Style and the ‘idea’ of the sophist in the time after Plato. The impact of form typology in sophistic teaching and writing on interdisciplinary scholarly work

open access: yesÁgora, 2009
Sophists acted among the educated persons and scholars in the Mediterranean after the 1st Sophistic in many regards as a special and distinct group. Since many examples show that they acted not only as sophists, but also performed other activities, we ...

Tuning the Dielectric Properties of Individual Clay Nanosheets by Interlayer Composition: Toward Nano‐Electret Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The dielectric properties of clays are studied on the level of individual monolayers and functional double stacks. The material breakdown characteristics and charge storage performance are analyzed. For illustration, a defined charge pattern representing a cuneiform character is produced, written into a microscopic clay tile, referencing the origins of

Selective and Precise Editing of Digital Polymers Through Parallel or Series Toehold‐Mediated Strand Displacement

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A sequence‐encoded supramolecular construct containing two accessible toeholds is developed herein for enabling multiple editing operations. By introducing specific input strands, it is possible to selectively erase or rewrite digital content through parallel or series toehold‐mediated strand displacement (PTMSD or STMSD).

If the tide is rising, who pays for the ark? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Two common goals of this meeting are to arrest the effects of sea level rise and other phenomena caused by Greenhouse Gases from anthropogenic sources ("GHG",) and to mitigate the effects.
