The Ludwig–Soret effect and stochastic processes

The Journal of Chemical Thermodynamics, 2011
Abstract New general stochastic models of thermodiffusion are proposed, which include velocity-dependent friction coefficient and noise tensor. These coefficients are computed exactly from the Boltzmann equation for the particular case of thermodiffusion in dilute gas mixtures.

The Soret effect in dry polymer electrolyte

Molecular Systems Design & Engineering, 2020
The Soret effect results in a concentration gradient when a mixture is exposed to a temperature gradient.

Large-scale convection induced by the Soret effect

Physical Review A, 1989
We present an experimental study of free convection in binary mixtures when convection is theoretically predicted to appear in the form of rolls of large extent. Quantitative measurements of the very slow velocities associated with this convective pattern are presented.

Long-wavelength thermocapillary instability with the Soret effect

Physical Review E, 2004
We study the onset of Marangoni instability of the quiescent equilibrium in a binary liquid layer with a nondeformable interface in the presence of the Soret effect. Linear stability analysis shows that both monotonic and oscillatory long-wavelength instabilities are possible depending on the value of the Soret number chi.

Soret effect in periodic forced rayleigh scattering

Optics Communications, 1988
Abstract In Forced Rayleigh Scattering of mixtures or suspensions the temperature gratings generate, by Soret effect, concentration gratings that may be very important since they produce both a phase and an amplitude grating superimposed on the principal one.

Soret Effect and Free Convection: A Way to Measure Soret Coefficients

2002
The measurement of Soret coefficients is discussed in the frame of natural convection, both for Rayleigh-Benard and thermogravitational configurations. The Rayleigh-Benard configuration, together with the measurement of the Hopf frequency, is recommended for negative values of Soret coefficients; the record of the thermogravitational transient vertical

Thermal Diffusion Potentials and the Soret Effect

Nature, 1954
WHEN a temperature gradient is applied to a homogeneous solution of an electrolyte, there is a tendency for a concentration gradient to be established (Soret effect). The thermal diffusion potential associated with the temperature gradient should change during the establishment of the Soret equilibrium. For a cell of the type:

Thermal Diffusion Potentials and the Soret Effect

Nature, 1955
IN a recent communication1, Tyrrell and Colledge have directed attention to the possibility of studying the Soret effect in solutions of electrolytes by observations of the e.m.f. of non-isothermal cells. In such cells, two reversible electrodes are maintained at different temperatures; owing to thermal diffusion, the concentration of solute around one

The Soret effect in bulk metallic glasses

Intermetallics, 2007
Abstract Compositional inhomogeneity induced by the Soret effect was studied in two Zr-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs): Zr 50 Cu 50 and Zr 50 Cu 40 Al 10 (at%), and one Cu-based BMG: Cu 60 Zr 30 Ti 10 (at%), all of which were prepared by rapid solidification.

Soret and Dilution Effects on Premixed Flames

Combustion Science and Technology, 1984
Abstract The structure of a wrinkled premixed flame is analysed theoretically. By assuming the reactive mixture diluted in an inert gas and a weak cross-diffusion coupling between the heat and mass fluxes, the effect of the change by the reaction of the physical gas properties (thermal conductivity, specific heat, number of molecules) and Soret and ...
